I went out to the dam twice this week. On Wednesday, I went out in hopes of catching some walleye, but didn't even get a single bite. When I went out on Friday, I brought along my cat fishing set-up and some homemade stink bait (real nasty stuff), but got skunked yet again. There were about 20 other people fishing the Dam, but no one was pulling anything in except weeds. It seems it's still a little early to go fishing, but I plan on going out there again in about 2 weeks once the water gets a little warmer. Hopefully I'll have better luck. Good luck to you guys, I hope you have better luck than I did.

I have been fishing the dam for over 25 years. I dont start until the first week of April. And if you do you need to get out to the water just out of the gates. You will need plenty of jigs alot of snags down there. I caught my first walleye there on April 7th. can't remember the year. It was a while ago. 21". If you want to PM me I can give you some ideas on what works for me.

Planning on fishing Mchenry Dam for Walleye. Anyone know when the males move up to the Dam. What is the triggering water temperature?

BAIT SHANTY REPORT 4/20-5/2 Fox River Mchenry to Algonquin

Starting a week and half ago we saw a big tempature drop and high winds making it pretty uncomfortable to get out. That Tuesday took out a group from Hospice Dreams and the wind was brutal. Got them back in Nielsons to get out of the wind and found some nice bass and to my suprise some descent perch...not especially long but thick and tall....nice fish ...all released.

Water temp continued to drop and the water fluctuated between avg and a little low until the weekend. One of the Bass clubs launched out of the Broken Oar and they looked to have done well considering the water temps they were picking up in the channels were 51-53f. No one limited but the bags appeared to have some nice fish....good to see em' all swim off.

Most of the anglers coming in are getting decent bass and the crappies have been fair....we caught 30 in a partial day as well as a 30" Bowfin here..... all released. And the water temp is back to about 62f as of this morning. Panfish have been a little picky.....taking only fatheads one day....then the next only taking baby roach or waxies....seems to change daily as of late. Personally got my largest Blue Gill this year off the dock.....on a small fathead minnow.

Carp are biting....Strawberry seems to be the flavor of the week

Catfish are being caught as well......spring is here!!!!

BAIT SHANTY REPORT 4/12-4/19 McHenry Dam to Algonquin Dam

Big changes in the water levels and water temps.... With the Sunday rain the water levels moved back up to almost a normal/slightly low level (up almost 14"), water clarity was definitly on the murky side Monday and Tuesday and with that alot more activity in the channels and back areas.....even with the sun out. Wednesday water started to clear up and the level was slightly up, with the rain in the evening the water clarity did nor change and the water levels dropped about 3-4 inches but is still in good range for the channels and back areas like Hickory Nut. HAve also seen the baitfish schools move back into the back bays and channels.

Water temp at 3:00pm Thursday was 62-63 F

I myself was fishing for carp over the weekend and the ones caught were as round as a soccer ball and maybe a week or two from spawn. Did see catfish and some crappies as well.

Haven't seen many boats out Mon-Wed.....the few shore anglers were catching cats and panfish...

With the warm water and higher water I would expect the fish to be on pretty good this weekend for those getting out....although we had early warm weather.....the internal alarms should be going off on alot of the fish that have been harder to find....

Local ponds still producing bass!!!

Fished the Dam on saturday ended up with 8 cats between myself and pbhess. All channels weighed in from 5 to 10lbs and the flathead was around 7 lbs. Great day on the river and it was awesome to catch cats in april. They were feeding very aggressively. Will post pictures later.

BAIT SHANTY report.......4/5-4/12 Mchenry Dam to Algonquin Dam

The end of last week and this past weekend continued the "Mixed Bag" of success with a fair number of anglers doing well...... just not catching what they set out to fish for. Had a few walleye anglers put in Fri, Sat and Sunday with the same results....a few scattered walleye with alot of other fish from catfish to crappies up to 16", bass and catfish. Few anglers hit more than one or two crappies.....but all that I have seen where big 14" plus.....even off the dock here ..... but just one.....

At the start of the week they closed the gates at Mchenry and have been trying to bring the water level above Mchenry up......but down here we have seen the water level drop 16 inches with Monday and Tuesday seeing the fastest drop. The lower water level has moved fish out of the channels to holes just outside and the bait fish are holding at the edges. We are still seeing decent but fewer bass in the channels and with the shallow conditions the water heats up fast during the mid-day and the catfish and carp can be seen pretty active in the afternoons and at dusk.

Warm temps and rain should really turn the fish on in this area this weekend and the blue gills and crappies have started to show eggs so regular springs patters may be on the way....
