History & Status of the Fishery

Status of the Fishery

Silver Lake is located approximately 5 miles south of Biwabik. It has a surface area of 34 acres and a maximum depth of 37 feet. Dissolved oxygen at the time of the survey was adequate for fish to a depth of 14 feet. The water clarity is good and aquatic vegetation is abundant. There are several homes and cabins present primarily on the east and north shores.

There is a public access located at the SW end of the lake off CR 525. The ramp is sand and the parking area is very small making trailer manuevering or parking diffucult. The survey crew backed in from the CR 525 right-of-way.

Black crappie numbers in 2013 (7.6/trap net) were above average when compared to other similar lakes in the area. The average crappie sampled was 6.3 inches long and about 6 years old. Most of the crappie sampled (74%) were under 6 inches long. The largest crappie sampled was 11.2 inches long.

Bluegill numbers in 2013 (14.7/trap net) were above average when compared to other similar lakes in the area. The average bluegill sampled was 5.9 inches long and about 5 years old. Nearly half (47%) of the bluegill sampled were under 5 inches long. The largest bluegill sampled was 8.9 inches long.

Northern pike numbers in 2013 (5.7/gill net) were above average when compared to other similar lakes in the area. The average pike sampled was 25.2 inches long and about 7 years old. The largest pike sampled was 36.0 inches long.

Largemouth bass numbers in 2013 (1.3/trap net) were above average when compared to other similar lakes in the area. The average largemouth sampled in the trap nets was 9.1 inches long and about 4 years old. Eighty-two percent of the largemouth sampled were under 5 years old. The largest bass sampled was 16.6 inches long.

Golden shiner, rock bass and white sucker were also sampled in 2013. Golden shiner numbers were above average and the average size was 6.4 inches long.
