History & Status of the Fishery
Gun Lake is a deep, clear, 184 acre lake located south of Lac La Croix within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). The maximum depth of Gun Lake is 135 feet with a mean depth of 35.8 feet. Shoal water substrates are predominately rock (boulder, rubble, or ledge rock), providing good spawning substrates for Lake Trout. Aquatic vegetation is sparse, which is typical of clear, rocky, infertile lakes on the Canadian Shield. A standard survey was completed in Gun Lake in early September of 2023.
Gun Lake has no special regulations. Fishing regulations follow statewide regulations for inland waters. Previous management plans identify several long-range goals, including providing a self-sustaining Lake Trout population with Lake Trout as the primary management species.
Lake Trout gill net catch rate was 0.2 fish per net, which was below average compared to previous surveys. One Lake Trout was sampled during the survey and was 30.8 inches long, weighed 10.4 pounds, and was aged at 23 years old. Although Lake Trout numbers have been declining in Gun Lake, there is likely a low density population of quality fish. Gun Lake is also located close to other lakes (Lac La Croix, Fat Lake) that provide Lake Trout opportunities to anglers.
Smallmouth Bass gill net catch rate was 0.7 fish per net, which was above average compared to previous surveys. Total length ranged from 14.1 to 15.4 inches, with an average of 14.7 inches. Average weight was 1.5 pounds, which was similar to previous surveys. A total of 2 year-classes were present and ranged from 5-7 years. Although Smallmouth Bass catch rates were low in gill nets, good numbers of Smallmouth Bass were observed in the shallows.
Cisco and Burbot (Eelpout) are also present and provide quality forage for top predators in Gun Lake.
