History & Status of the Fishery
Northern pike abundance decreased slightly from 2.7 per gill net lift in the 1986 survey to 2.0 per net, which is below the normal range for this lake class. Average individual weight of northern pike increased from1.5 pounds in 1986 to 2.4 pounds. Northern pike age structure indicates consistent reproduction and recruitment; however, no pike from the 1988 stocking were sampled.
Black bullhead abundance increased dramatically from 37.3 per trap net lift in 1986 to 113.3 per net, which six times greater than the upper limit of the normal range.
Bluegill abundance increased slightly from 7.3 per trap net lift in 1986 to 8.6 per net, remaining within the normal range. Bluegill recruitment appears to be consistent and a strong 1987 year class (age-IV+) composed 50% of the sample. Mean lengths-at-age indicate average growth compared to statewide means. Forty-eight percent of the bluegills sampled were 7.0 inches or greater in length.
Yellow perch abundance was 2.0 per gill net lift, which is below the normal range.
Walleye abundance declined slightly from 1.3 per gill net lift in 1986 to 1.0 per net, but remains within the normal range. The average weight of individual walleye increased from 1.0 pounds in 1986 to 1.5 pounds. Walleye recruitment appears to be inconsistent. Walleyes sampled from the 1985 and 1990 year classes were the result of stocking and natural reproduction, respectively.
