History & Status of the Fishery
A targeted gill net survey was conducted during early summer 2023 to assess Walleye and Yellow Perch populations. Data from this survey will help inform decisions regarding potential management of double-crested cormorants on this basin.
Walleye abundance (7.5 fish/gill net) has increased from the record-low level (5.3 fish/gill net) observed in 2021. Current abundance is at or near levels expected for this type of lake. Size structure has declined in recent years but is still dominated by larger fish. Mean size was 18.0 inches and 2.5 pounds. Thirteen year classes were sampled. The majority of the sample was younger fish (ages 1-3) but Walleye up to age 18 were collected.
Yellow Perch abundance has declined since the last survey. Gill net catches averaged 3.3 fish/net. Other population attributes were similar to those documented in the 2021 survey. Size structure was dominated by smaller perch, growth was relatively fast, and only three year classes (ages 2-4) were sampled.
