History & Status of the Fishery
Sugar Lake (DOW# 11-0026; lake class 27) is a 702-acre lake with 6.73 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth of 44 feet located North-east of Remer, MN. There is a US Forest Service owned public access on the west shore. The DNR has classified Minnesota's lakes into 43 different classes based on physical, chemical and other characteristics. Sugar Lake is in lake class 27; lakes in this class are generally large, deep, and regularly shaped. Other class 27 lakes include; Ada, Crooked, and Lower Sucker Lakes. The lake is primarily managed for Largemouth Bass and Black Crappie and secondarily for Northern Pike, Bluegill, Walleye, and Yellow Perch.
Largemouth Bass are abundant with angling opportunities for both quantity and quality fish. Largemouth Bass averaged 11.6 inches long and bass up to 18 inches were sampled. Black Crappie are abundant and ranged in length from 4 to 11 inches, with an average length of 9 inches. Walleye numbers have increased and have exceeded the management goal of three fish per gillnet. Walleye mean length was 18.4 inches with fish up to 28 inches sampled. The lake was previously stocked with fingerlings but most recently with fry. Northern Pike are very abundant and ranged in length from 12 to 28 inches, with an average length of 18 inches. Abundant Bluegill can also provide additional fishing opportunities to anglers with quality size fish present. In 2019, 27 percent of the trap net sample measured 7 inches of greater in length. Other fish species sampled include, Hybrid Sunfish, Yellow Perch, and Rock Bass.
People can have significant impacts on lakes and the fish populations they support. Harvest, lakeshore development, removal of shoreline vegetation, and introductions of invasive species can all adversely affect fish populations. Currently, no aquatic invasive species (AIS) have been identified Sugar Lake. AIS are moved from infested to non-infested waters by anglers, boaters, and lake shore owners and can adversely impact lakes and fish populations. To avoid spreading AIS, lake users are required to remove all aquatic plants or animals from their watercraft and drain all water from their boat before leaving the access. If you suspect an infestation of an invasive species in this lake, save a specimen and report it to a local natural resource office. Additional information on all of these topics can be found on the DNR website (www.dnr.state.mn.us) or by contacting the Walker Area Fisheries office.
