wild mushrooms

Anyone here forage for other than morels? Lots of good stuff out now...I pretty much restrict myself to HOW/maitake (Grifola frondosa) and shrimp of the woods (Entoloma aborvitum/aborted entoloma) during fall.. I might take a COW (L.sulferus) or a few inkies or wood blewitt but I really don't have foraging time any more,never mind prep time. Honeys are just about done around here now and last week I saw some enoki mushrooms.

BTW,I think chanterelles are far better than morels and almost as foolproof to ID. This past spring I tried the "poisonous" false morels. Gyromitra spp. Delicious. And to think I've assed on them for decades thinking they were toxic.

I just got done cleaning up some golden oysters also. Get themquick while they're small otherwise the fungus gnat larva will chew all the way up the stem. Some of them maggots get big.

A buddy and I went back today and filled 2 more 5 gallon buckets.  They're all going to get dehydrated.

Definitely a good start.

First find of the season.   The same tree produced a lot last year as well.

I cut up the puffball mushroom last night to have for supper along with some freshly butchered venison.  The wife and kids won't eat mushrooms, but I love them!  I'm real glad I tried one of these puffball mushrooms.  It was real good fried up in butter!

44/45 as junkie said I’m self taught as well. I do belong to a couple of Facebook mushroom groups. I also have a friend in Eagle/east Troy  that is a mycologist. He also has a store called Matt’s wild foods, cultivates his own shrooms. I send him pictures of questionable ones that I have not seen before.

Not very long, they'll start to turn yellow inside within a day or two after picking.

This one was too far gone, but these were everywhere up where I deer hunt.  I picked one that was pure white to try.  How long do these puffball mushrooms keep?

I would love to do a mentorship, but so far I'm just self taught. ​There are many easily identifiable mushrooms so I just started with those. ​If I find a new one that I find consistently, I'll post it on a FB group for identification so I can pick it in the future. ​Eventually you ​just start to learn more and more.

Those of you that pick mushroom's, were you mentored at some point, or did you learn on your own? I'm sure coming across many different varieties lately while in the woods!

How will you be using it? I've had it deep-fried, soup, and sautéed with onions all delicious. My favorite is soup

I usually pick out the bigger, firm ones to fry up and then dehydrate the rest. My two kids don't quite like the texture of mushrooms at their age so I'd say 90% of the mushrooms I harvest end up as a powder that I add to most meals. I'd like to try freezing SOTW and see how they turn out. Last year I pickled some and if I get the time I plan to do that again as they pickle nicely! ​

I used to get shrimp like that around my house, but not anymore. 

Are you going to dehydrate them?

Oysters are looking a little better today.
