Not trying to start a debate or anything on what the best deer gun is. With WI's opening weekend starting on Saturday, just wondering what everybody will be using.

I will still be using a 20 gauge shooting sabot slugs. Where I hunt, I will never have a shot over about 70-80 yards and haven't got a new gun since rifles were allowed statewide.

Can't hunt this year because I broke my leg on Monday while walking in the woods. If I was hunting it would be with my BB gun...................... which of course stands for Belgium Browning, grade II, semi-auto in 30-06.   Have used it for 40+ years and still shoots and looks great.  Good Luck everyone.

Usually take the Remington 7400 30.06 to the stand.  Use a Savage .308 for days when I am more mobile, and when we will be  group hunting and make some subtle pushes.

I think at .257 WBY would be an absolutely fantastic whitetail gun.  Unique, fun and flat shooting.  Just do it!

To answer the question about my .270 Wby Mag:  I think the recoil is very tolerable.  However, my only frame of reference is comparing it to a 12 gauge slug gun.

I'm left-handed.  When Waupaca county changed to allowing rifles 8 or so years ago, I began my quest for a rifle.  I wanted something slightly above entry level, but not complete high end.  I also wanted a caliber that would be effective for whitetail as well as elk, should I ever make it out west.

Hours of time over months of scouring gunbroker.com, and there she was:  my Weatherby Mark V Accumark in .270.  It is one flat shooting smoke thrower.

The rifle has two downsides:

1.  It's long and heavy.  But lighter = more kick, so I'm okay with it.

2. The ammunition options are very limited and outrageously expensive.  I'm talking $3 - $4 every time you pull the trigger, which is just stupid.

That said, I shot a doe a few year back on a nice calm day.  I had a very steady rest and had time.  I held dead center in the boiler room and touched it off.  She went down.  When we got to her, my buddy ranged back to where I shot her from, and it was 330 some yards.  The gun absolutely drives tacks.

Ruger M77 stainless with synthetic stock topped with Leopold scope  chambered in Remington 260. Very little recoil and very accurate.

All depends on my mood and the weather. My go to is a Remington BDL in .243. If it’s wet, I’ll sometimes use a 7mm 08 Remington SPS or Ruger M77 in .308. Sometimes I’ll take my little Marlin carbine in .41 mag.

This year I may rough it with my grandpa’s old Marlin .30-30 with iron sights. Or, might take the Smith 629 in .44 mag and try to get close.

A guy needs to have options!

NorthernExposure,  your post hits home. Lost my father last year as well. He carried the Marlin 30-30 lever. I think those old lever action rifles are cool as heck.   My condolences for your loss.

I have a date with the three 08 that my father bought me when I started deer hunting. Rem 788 bolt.

Have a safe hunt everyone!

I usually don't gun deer hunt anymore (go after ducks instead), but when I do, I shoot a Remington Model 4 in .270 Win, Redfield 3x9 Illuminator with Accutrac.  My secondary rifle is a Marlin 336C in .30-30 Win.

the Jimmer,

I had a buddy in high-school named Jim who asked me what deer rifle he should purchase to deer hunt with.  The recommendation was a Marlin 336 lever.  His was also in .35 Remington.

Primary rifle is a pre-64 Winchester Model 88 in .308. It still has its original Weaver 4x scope.

Also packed:

Taurus Raging Bull in 44 mag

Winchester 1300 12 gauge slug gun (in case I need to clear some brush)

Marlin lever in .35 Remington most likely. Will have my daughter out with my Winchester Ultimate Shadow in a .243. Through the week I will probably give the TC Encore a go, it’s chambered in .270 with iron sights. My favorite rifle that I’ve ever owned was a Remington Mdl 700 mountain rifle LSS in a .270. It had a gray laminated wood stock with stainless. A Beautiful rifle and a great shooter. Lots of mountain rifles out there but not many of the LSS. It took some really good bucks but met a bad end. Win some, lose some I guess.

Rem 74 in 30-06 for the past 30 years, since I was 16 years old.  I cleaned up the old Marlin 30-30 lever action that hasn’t been shot in close to 30 years and plan on using that for drives this year.  Hoping to take a deer with it, my father bought it when he was 18 and he past away last year.

Ruger M77 chambered in 7mm mag, or Remington 1187 with Hastings rifled barrel. Both are sighted in and have taken several deer. Depends on the Saturday morning mood.
