Vilas County Lakes

Well old man winter has returned to Vilas County W.I.. Where I am located at the top of Vilas County W.I..
 
All lakes that I have seen are re froze over compared to 10 days ago when many were wide open and no ice. most rivers are open.
 
Several inches of snow has accumulated the past 24 hrs and more is expected  during the next few days with some sleet and rain.
 
Remember, support your local business’s.
 
Some openings in May and June of 2024.

Walleye spawn will commence as waters warm which is a natural with the sun exposure we are getting.  It may take a bit of time for the eggs to soften which may slow down the process a bit.  With late ice outs the photoperiodism and extra time allows for eggs to soften and has the fish ready even though there's only 10-20 yards of open water.

 Well it is official, the ice is completely out on my lake, as these photos of a few short minutes ago were taken. Wanted to show the pics.
 
 Saw 3 Kayakers earlier today and a Canoer just passed next to my shore line 10 minutes ago. What a fast change from winter.

Some years ago we saw this at the same time of year. A few of the bigger lakes will take a little longer.
 
As of today, some open water and black ice is common on most lakes in Vilas County WI..

Many people have been fishing the Wisconsin river for a few weeks, as well as other smaller rivers.
 
Remember, support the local business’s.
 
Some openings in July and August of 2024.

With shorelines opening how will this affect walleye spawn?   Is the water warm enough yet?   Is spearing underway?   Odd year just wondering how things are going.

I can’t believe how quickly the ice has gone out. Where I fished Sunday afternoon is now wide open. Checked a couple other spots and one hit of the spud went straight through or the shoreline was gone with open holes everywhere. That’s a wrap on the ice season for me

Fished Saturday and Sunday, ice is going fast, got wet boots coming off on Sunday, warm weather this week, putting my ice fishing stuff away today, see colder weather coming next week but I fish by myself and do not want to chance it.
