Selkirk Shores State Park

With spectacular views of sunset and the bluff on Lake Ontario, one of the five Great Lakes in North America, Selkirk Shores State Park offers great views, as well as fun and recreational activities for RV campers on vacation. Located along State Route 3 about two miles southwest of Port Ontario, and six miles west of Pulaski Town, New York, the park is easily accessible by RVs, trailers, and other vehicles, and sits along the migration route for various species of birds that provide campers and visitors with extraordinary sights, with and without binoculars.

Selkirk Shores State Park features amenities such as boat launches, cabins, campsites with electric hookups for RVs, dumping stations, food, pavilions, picnic tables, playgrounds, showers, swimming beach, and tent/trailer sites (accessible). Besides the spectacular sunsets over Lake Ontario, visitors get to partake in outstanding fishing experiences as well as hiking and biking trails which lead to lush meadows and woodlands in the park. Other activities you can enjoy while at the park include hunting, recreation programs, snowmobiling, x-country skiing, and picnicking.

In addition, you can bring your boat to the park and take advantage of the boat launching ramp to explore the park’s water. Small boats can be launched from the Pine Grove site into the Salmon River, while larger boats can be launched from the Mexico Point Boat Launch on the Little Salmon River. The picnic area catches the breeze off the Lake Ontario providing a place in the shade to enjoy a picnic.

A large portion of the park was once a potato farm. After the land was made into a park, most of the farm land was planted with trees.


Transportation

Driving

Selkirk Shores State Park is located along State Route 3 about two miles southwest of Port Ontario, and six miles west of Pulaski Town. As a result, the park is easily accessible by RV, trailer, or car. You’ll find it easy to navigate within the park in your vehicle or rig because there are local roads that connects different parts of the park. Furthermore, no driving restrictions exist within the park.

Parking

There are a number of parking options for RVs and trailers in Selkirk Shores State Park, with five parking lots distributed throughout the park. Parking lots are available at Acorn Loop, Chipmunk Loop, and Dragonfly Loop in Selkirk Shores State Park for your RVs and trailers. Besides, you can also park at campsites if you are staying overnight at the park.

Reservations Camping
Acorn Loop

Acorn Loop in Selkirk Shores State Park consists of 47 pet-friendly available for tents and RVs/trailers. RV length limit in Acorn Loop is 41 feet. The loop is equipped with electric hookups for RVs, but do not offer water hookups. However, fresh water fill-up is available. Amenities available within, and around the Acorn Loop include a dump station, restroom and showers, parking lot, and a basketball court. The use of generators is permitted only between 9:00 am and 11am and 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Excessively loud and/or obnoxious generators are not be allowed. You can be camped at a particular campsite at Acorn Loop for a maximum of 14 consecutive nights.

Bird Loop

Bird Loop in Selkirk Shores State Park consists of 18 pet-friendly available for tents and RVs/trailers. RV length limit in Bird Loop is 40 feet. The loop is equipped with electric hookups for RVs, but water hookups are not available. There is, however, access to fresh water. The use of generators is permitted only between 9:00 am and 11am and 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Excessively loud and/or obnoxious generators are not be allowed. You can stay for up to 14 consecutive night in a campsite at Bird Loop but will be required to leave within 48 hours of staying the maximum number of nights.

Chipmunk Loop

Chipmunk Loop in Selkirk Shores State Park consists of 31 pet-friendly available for tents and RVs/trailers. RV length limit in Chipmunk Loop is 40 feet. The loop is equipped with electric hookups, and access to fresh-water. Amenities available at the Chipmunk Loop include cabins, a playground, restroom and showers, and parking lot. Generator use in Chipmunk Loop is only allowed between 9:00 am and 11am and 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Excessively loud and/or obnoxious generators are not be allowed. You can stay for up to 14 consecutive night on RV vacation in a campsite at Chipmunk Loop before moving out of the site.

Dragonfly Loop

Dragonfly Loop in Selkirk Shores State Park consists of 31 pet-friendly available for tents and RVs/trailers. RV length limit in Chipmunk Loop is 40 feet. The loop is equipped with electric hookups, and access to fresh-water. Amenities available at Dragonfly Loop include cabins, a playground, restroom and showers, and parking lot. Generator use in now is only allowed between 9:00 am and 11am and 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Excessively loud and/or obnoxious generators are not be allowed. You can stay for up to 14 consecutive night on RV vacation in a campsite at Chipmunk Loop before moving out of the site.

In-Season
Bird Watching

Selkirk Shores State Park is an amazing park for bird watching all year-round. This is because the park is a migration concentration site, diverse species concentration site, and features bird species at risk. Examples of bird species that you can see at Selkirk Shores State Park include bald eagle, osprey, ruby-throated hummingbird, and wood duck. A Bird Conservation Area (BCA) is also located in the park where New York bird species at risk are supported and preserved. The BCA is a popular destination for campers because it supports assemblages of birds associated with marshes, forests and shrub/scrub including more than 80 species that have been confirmed as breeders.

Hiking

You definitely would not want to visit Selkirk Shores State Park without your hiking boots as the park has twelve hiking trails for you to choose from, each with varying levels of difficulty. These trails add up to about 12 miles of marked and unmarked trails. The Lakeshore Trail, for example, runs along the shorelines of Lake Ontario and provides hikers scenic views of the lake as well as the beautiful horizon. The 0.3-mile long Goosefoot Trail and 0.7-mile long Marsh Rim Trail also offers RV campers at the park amazing views of Grindstone Creek.

Fishing

Fishing at Selkirk Shores State Park is an activity that RV campers love to do because it sits along the shores of Lake Ontario which is a great spot for fishing. With a dedicated fishing access point to the lake, campers and anglers enjoy fishing for various species of fish such as salmon, steelhead trout. The salmon born in the rivers around Selkirk Shores State Park spend their adulthood feeding and growing in Lake Ontario and after about four years, return to spawn in the rivers where they were born. Two types of steelhead trout are found in Lake Ontario; the Skamania steelhead trout that run up the lake’s tributaries from May to September, and the Washington steelhead trout that run up the lake’s tributaries from mid-September to February.

Off-Season
Beaching/Swimming

Pack you swimming suits and gear on your trip to Selkirk Shores State park to enjoy swimming and beaching activities on the 600-foot sand beach located in the park. The waters in the beach are tested and kept staffed with lifeguards annually to ensure that you have a safe and pleasurable swimming and beaching experience while at the park on RV vacation. When there is a lack of lifeguard coverage or water quality issues, swimming is prohibited in the park in keeping with strict safety standards. There are no camping locations at the beach.

Boating

Boating activities at Lake Ontario are available to RV campers and boat lovers while at Selkirk Shores State Park. Equipped with a dedicated boat launching ramp, the park provides direct access to the lake which is available for launching personal non-motorized boats. As a result, you can come on your vacation to the park with your boats to enjoy the experience on the lake. Trailers are not permitted at the boat launching ramp.

Snowmobiling and Skiing

If you love to ski or snowmobile, then you’ll definitely love the experience at Selkirk Shores State Park. Camping at Selkirk Shores State Park in winter offers you the opportunity to ride your snowmobile on the three-mile Secondary 52C Trail or the one-mile long Lakeshore Trail while you explore the lovely sights of the landscape and vistas along the trail. Besides you can also ski on the Marsh Rim Trail which runs for just under a mile around the shore of the Grindstone Creek.
