Cedar Point State Park

Cedar Point State Park, located in New York's Thousand Islands region, is the ideal destination for RV campers looking to spend some time down by the water. Fish, swim, boat, or simply kick back and watch freighter ships cruising the clear waters of the St. Lawrence River.

Not to be confused with the nearby Cedar Point County Park, the state park which shares the same name is one of the oldest in the New York State Park system -- but it's certainly not the largest. However, don't judge this state park by its size! Packed within the park's 48 acres are countless recreation opportunities. Whether you're looking for a camping excursion complete with all the water adventures you can handle, or just a day-use destination for a picnic and a ball game, Cedar Point State Park is a popular spot for outdoor enthusiasts from all across the country.

Tent and RV campers will almost certainly find an open spot on weekdays, but reservations are recommended on weekends and during holidays and peak periods. Though there are plenty of campsites to choose from here, Cedar Point State Park can get crowded during the summer months. Noisy neighbors might also be a problem, so be sure to plan accordingly!

Transportation

Driving

Internal roads at Cedar Point State Park are paved, so campers need not worry about navigating the park. As the park is well-maintained, road hazards are few and far between. RV sites are gravel and leveled, although some sites are very close together, so exercise caution when backing in.

Parking

Two paved parking lots are available at Cedar Point State Park. One is located right by the boat launch and docking area, and the other is a quick walk from the swimming beach. Parking spots fill up fast during the summer, so visitors are advised to arrive early, as street parking is not available. All day-use visitors must acquire a vehicle entry pass upon arrival.

Seasonal Actvities in Cedar Point State Park

In-Season
Fishing

Angling is a popular pastime for visitors of Cedar Point State Park. The accessible fishing pier makes it easy to cast your line into the fish-filled waters of the St. Lawrence River. Walleye, bass, pike, perch, and other warm-water species are all on the menu here. Valid fishing licenses are required for all anglers, regardless of their age. Planning to cook your catch? Be careful; some of the species within the St. Lawrence River contain high levels of chemicals and other contaminants. For more information, check the guide provided with your NY fishing license.

Boating

Cedar Point State Park provides everything boaters may need during their excursion on the St. Lawrence River, including rentals, docks, launches, and marina pump-out stations. For NY residents, all private watercraft must be registered with the state. Out-of-state visitors are permitted to bring their own watercraft, which must also be registered in their state of residence.

Swimming

Cedar Point State Park's sheltered swimming beach offers welcome respite from the summer heat. Although the swimming area is relatively small and can become crowded on weekends in the peak season, it's sandy and large enough to spread out a beach towel and soak up some sun. The water is clear and shallow, making this the perfect spot for novice swimmers to earn their water wings.

Off-Season
Outdoor Sports

Looking to enjoy a little friendly competition with your camping crew at Cedar Point State Park? Pack up your sports gear and head to the courts! Volleyball, shuffleboard, and softball are all on offer here. Plan to bring your own gear, including balls, bats, and appropriate clothing, as it's unclear whether equipment rentals are available within the park. Any kiddie campers will also enjoy romping around the park's playground.

Picnicking

Cedar Point State Park offers basic amenities for picnickers, namely tables situated out in the open near the lake. Pack a picnic lunch and settle in for a relaxing meal watching the boats sail by. Be sure to keep this pristine park clean by either packing out all waste or making use of the park's trash receptacles.

Hunting

Hunting is permitted at Cedar Point State Park, though little information is available on the species you might find on your trip. Waterfowl is likely on the list of game, thanks to the park's location on the St. Lawrence River, though hunters are encouraged to contact the park directly for information on species and restrictions. A valid NY hunting license is required, in addition to a park-specific hunting pass.
