Walnut Woods State Park

Walnut Woods State Park is 260-acre camping park in Wes Des Moines, Iowa. Surrounded by black walnut woodlands and the Raccoon River, the park and its shady campground are perfect for outdoor recreation. Campers can enjoy fishing, hiking, river floating, or simply relaxing at this state park.

Set within the Walnut Woods, home to the largest surviving natural stand of black walnut trees in North America, the campground is filled with all sorts of wildlife and over 90 species of birds, including migrating warblers, flycatchers and a variety of songbirds. Spend your days hiking the three miles of trails leading along the riverbed, and enjoying cross-country skiing during the winter season. The fun lasts all year long!

Both standard campers and RV campers are accommodated in the campground at Walnut Woods State Park. There are standard tent-only sites, limited RV-only sites, as well as a good mix of both. Facilities include a kids’ playground, modern restrooms, and a dump station. As the park is popular in the summer months, we’d suggest reserving your campsite ahead of time to avoid disappointment.

Transportation

Driving

Walnut Woods State Park is located off Iowa Highway 5. Take exit 102 and follow the signs to the entrance of the park. The access roads have been repaved so they are smooth and offer a comfortable ride.

The roads are tricky to navigate for big rigs and if you do have trouble, there is a loop at the boat ramp for turning around if you need it. There is also a parking area here.

Once you’ve set up camp, there are nearly three miles of trails to explore by foot or by bike. A boat ramp means you can also explore the park from the river.
