History & Status of the Fishery
ROUND LAKE EXPERIENCES WINTERKILL NEARLY EVERY YEAR. THE FISH POPULATION IS DOMINATED BY BLACK BULLHEADS AND CARP; SPECIES TOLERA OF LOW DISSOLVED OXYGEN CONCENTRATIONS. BLACK BULLHEAD CATCH PER UNIT EFFORT (CPUE AVERAGED 26.0 FISH PER LIFT, WHICH IS IN THE FOURTH QUARTILE FOR THE LAKE CLASS. BLACK BULLHEAD RANGED IN LENGTH FROM 4.5 TO 13.9 INCHES, AND AVERAGED 8.0 INCHES. YOUNG OF THE YEAR CARP WERE THE MOST NUMEROUS SPECIES SAMPLED IN SHORELINE SEINING. ADULT BLUEGILL AND BLACK CRAPPIE ARE STOCKED PERIODICALLY IN ROUND LAKE TO PROVIDE SOME OPPORTUNITY FOR SPORT FISHING TRAP NET CPUE FOR BLUEGILL AND BLACK CRAPPIE WITH 56.25 AND 5.75 FISH PER LIFT, RESPECTIVELY. BLUEGILL TRAP NET CPUE WAS IN THE FOUR QUARTILE FOR THE LAKE CLASS, AND CPUE FOR BLACK CRAPPIE WAS IN THE THIRD QUARTILE. GROWTH RATES FOR BLUE- GILL WERE EXCEPTIONAL; BLUEGILL AVERAGED 6.3 AND 7.8 INCHES BY AGES 3 AND 4, RESPECTIVELY. BLACK CRAPPIE AVERAGED 3.8 INCHES AT AGE 1. FREQUENT WINTERKILLS HAVE PREVENTED CRAPPIE FROM LIVING LONG ENOUGH TO GROW TO LARGE SIZES.
