History & Status of the Fishery
Forest Lake is primarily managed for Walleyes (WAE) and Muskellunge (MUE). Walleye stocking at the time of this assessment has been 2.0 pounds of fingerlings per littoral-acre (3,062 pounds) in odd numbered years. Starting in 2008, Muskellunge stocking currently consists of biennially stocking fall fingerlings at a rate of up to 1.5 fish/littoral-acre (2,296 fish).
In 2013, Walleyes were sampled above the median level for abundance in the gill net catch (4.25 fish/set), while increasing from the 2007 assessment (2.13 fish/set). The average size of WAE sampled in 2013 was 18.1 inches and 2.5 pounds. Approximately 38 percent of all WAE captured measured 20.0 inches or longer. Two Muskellunge (MUE) were sampled during this gill net assessment. The MUE captured were 34.5 and 39.6 inches long and averaged 12.1 pounds. Northern Pike (NOP) were sampled above the median level for abundance for gill nets. The average size of NOP sampled was 22.9 inches and 2.7 pounds. Approximately 17 percent of sampled NOP measured 26.0 inches or longer. Yellow Perch (YEP) were sampled above the median level for abundance in gill nets. The average size of YEP sampled was 6.5 inches and 0.12 pounds. Approximately 3 percent of all YEP sampled measured 8.0 inches long or larger.
