History & Status of the Fishery
Stone is a 206 acre lake located 2 miles south of Rollins, MN off County #611. Stone lake has limited public access off the County Road #611 bridge between the north and south basin. Maximum depth is 17 feet and 95% of the lake is less than 15 feet deep. Fish population investigations have been conducted in 1956, 1975 and 1997. Black bullhead were sampled at a rate of 95.2 per gillnet lift which was well above average compared to other Minnesota lakes of similar type. Mean length of sampled black bullhead was 6.6 inches. Northern pike abundance index value of 4.5 per lift was average compared to other Minnesota lakes of similar type. Fifty five percent of the northerns sampled were longer than 21.0 inches. Growth rates were average, with northerns reaching 21.7 inches at age IV. Yellow perch abundance index value of 10.5 per lift was average compared to other Minnesota lakes of similar type. Sixty five percent of sampled yellow perch were longer than 8.0 inches and they were 6.1 inches long at age IV. Bluegill index netting value of 1.2 per lift was below average compared to other Minnesota lakes of similar type. One hundred percent of sampled bluegill were longer than six inches and mean length was 8.7 inches. Bluegill growth rates were average with fish reaching 4.5 inches at age IV, and only one aged bluegill was less than age VII. Other fish species sampled during the 1997 survey include walleye, pumpkinseed sunfish, black crappie, white sucker, blacknose shiner, pugnose shiner and johnny darter. Information from one walleye captured by an angler was donated to the survey crew.
