History & Status of the Fishery
South Twin Lake is located approximately 6 miles south of Aurora. There is a gravel boat ramp and a large parking area on the south side of the lake. A popular swimming beach and picnic area are located on the northwest side.
Dissolved oxygen levels were very low during the 2012 survey and may have impacted the gill net catch. Some net sets extended into the poorly oxygenated depths below 8 ft. In past surveys, oxygen was generally good until about 14 ft. Water clarity was also less than usual at 2 ft indicating an algae bloom.
Walleye, northern pike, and yellow perch were the main species sampled at low abundance in gill nets.
Black crappie numbers in 2012 (9.3/trap net) were similar to the long term average for all assessments on this lake. Crappie were from just four year classes in 2006, 2007, 2010, and 2011 so they tended to fall into a few size ranges. The older crappie were in the 9 to 12 inch size range.
Bluegill numbers in 2012 (1.6/trap net) were lower than the long term average for all assessments on this lake. The average bluegill sampled was 5.5 inches long and about 4 years old. The largest bluegill sampled was 7.4 inches.
