History & Status of the Fishery
WAE POPULATION IS WELL BELOW STATE AND LOCAL AVERAGES. SPAWNING AREAS ARE NOT PRESENT. PRESENT WAE POPULATION IS NOT REPRESENTED BY THE 1988 FINGERLING STOCKING (4/LB) AND IS LIKELY THE RESULT OF STOCKING BY RESIDENTS (PERSONNEL COMMUNICATION). SOME LARGE NOP ARE PRESENT, HOWEVER, LACK OF SPAWNING AREAS KEEP POPULATIONS WELL BELOW LOCAL AVERAGES IN NUMBERS. LMB POPULATION ABUNDANCE IS AVERAGE FOR GILLNETS AND TRAPNETS AND THEY REPRESENT THE MAJOR PREDITOR SPECIES. YEP ARE ABUNDANT, AND HAVE ENJOYED A 4- FOLD INCREASE SINCE 1974; THE GROWTH RATES OF OLDER FISH ARE SLOW. PAN ABUNDANCE IS LOW, AVERAGE SIZE OF THOSE IS GOOD (6-8 INCHES). SOFTRAY FORAGE TAKEN IN TRAPNETS AND SEINES IS LIMITED TO WTS AND FEW GOS. THE SPARSITY OF AQUATIC VEGETATION MAY WELL BE THE DRIVING FORCE SHAPING THE FISH COMMUNITY STRUCTURE.
