History & Status of the Fishery
Brook trout and rainbow trout have been stocked on an alternate basis in Pickerel Lake since 1996. This population assessment consisted of 40 trap net and 4 gill net sets. One of the gill nets was a 24 hour set, but due to excessive mortality (>10/set), the last 3 gill nets were set for only 3 hours each. A total of 14 brook trout were captured in the 24 hour gill net (14.0/set), 6 in the 3 hour gill net (2.0/set) and 48 in the trap nets (1.2/set). It is suspected that all of the brook trout sampled originated from the 2004 stocking. On May 6, 2004 a total of 700 brook trout were stocked at a rate of 2.9/pound. They were sampled 5 months and 12 days later at 1.19/pound. This represents a 244% increase in weight over that period. The brook trout ranged in length from 10.2 to 14.7 inches. They had a mean length of 12.3 inches in the 24 hour gill net and the 40 trap nets and 12.5 inches in the 3 hour gill net. What was surprising was the absence of rainbow trout in this assessment. In 2003, 1,400 rainbows were stocked at the rate of 3.14/pound. They were also stocked in 1997, 1999 and 2001. White sucker were sampled at 0.3/trap net. They ranged in length from 7.6 to 20.2 inches and had a mean length of 13.3 inches. The number sampled has increased from the last assessment (1999) when only 1 or 0.03/trap net were sampled. No suckers were observed in the 1994 assessment. Also sampled in the trap nets were golden shiners, fathead minnow, finescale dace. In addition, brook sticklebacks were sampled in the minnow traps.
