Longyear Lake is a 158 acre lake located in the City of Chisholm. Longyear is in ecological lake class 19. Lakes in this class are small, shallow, and have a high percentage of littoral area. Longyear Lake has a maximum depth of 19 feet and is 98% littoral. The lake is managed primarily for walleye and northern pike.
The walleye gill-net catch in 2010 was 2.3/net, which is similar to other recent assessments and above the management plan goal of 2.0/net. Sampled fish ranged from 9.2 to 22.8 inches, with a mean length of 16.0 inches. Recent management has consisted of walleye fry stocking in odd-numbered years. Age analysis indicated 77% of sampled fish were from years when stocking occurred. Mean length-at-age was similar to the statewide average for all ages, with walleye growing to 17.2 inches in 5 years.
The northern pike gill-net catch was 3.7/net, which is within the expected range for this lake class and similar to other recent assessments. Mean length-at-age was similar to the statewide average for all ages. Northern pike reached 24.4 inches in 5 years.
Black bullhead was the most abundant species in the gill nets at 24.0/net. Net catches for black bullhead have periodically been very high in historic assessments. The 2010 catch was down from the 2003 catch rate of 70.8/net, but still above the lake class expected range. Sampled bullheads had a mean length of 9.7 inches.
The gill-net catch rate for yellow perch was 17.8/net, which is up from the previous assessment and near the lake class third quartile (19.0/net). Sampled perch had a mean length of 7.0 inches.

Other species sampled in test nets include black crappie, brown bullhead, pumpkinseed sunfish, hybrid sunfish and white sucker. Near-shore IBI (Index of Biotic Integrity) sampling with a small-mesh seine and back-pack electrofishing was conducted in 2010 in an attempt to capture smaller fishes not normally encountered with standard sampling gear. Additional species captured in near-shore sampling included golden shiner, Iowa darter and largemouth bass.
