History & Status of the Fishery
Ely Lake is located approximately 2 miles southeast of Eveleth. It has a surface area of 827 acres and a maximum depth of 70 feet. Water clarity is very good and aquatic vegetation is abundant. Access is by concrete ramp with limited parking space.
Ely Lake has a small inlet and a fixed concrete sill dam at the outlet that is a barrier to upstream fish movement. A culvert also diverts some water to St. Mary's Lake for water supply to the City of Eveleth. Lake bottom substrates along the shoreline of Ely Lake are mostly sand and gravel. Plants are abundant along the shoreline to a depth of 15 ft; the most common plants are muskgrass and various pondweeds. The shoreline is heavily developed with homes and cottages.
Bluegill numbers in 2012 (56.6/trap net) were higher than the long term average for all assessments on this lake. The average bluegill sampled was 6.7 inches long and about 8 years old. The largest bluegill sampled was 8.7 inches.
Black crappie numbers in 2012 (6.8/trap net) were identical to the long term average for all assessments on this lake. The average crappie sampled was 6.0 inches long and about 4 years old. The largest crappie sampled was 10.4 inches.
Northern pike numbers in 2012 (2.4/gill net) were higher than the long term average for all assessments on this lake. The average pike sampled was 25.4 inches long and about 4 years old. The largest pike sampled was 30.9 inches.
Walleye numbers in 2012 (6.4/gill net) were slightly higher than the long term average for all assessments on this lake. The average walleye sampled was 16.8 inches long and about 4 years old. The largest walleye sampled was 26.4 inches.
Largemouth and smallmouth bass are common in Ely Lake and are typically underestimated in our nets. Hybrid sunfish, pumpkinseed and rock bass are also common.
