History & Status of the Fishery

Pine Lake is a relatively small, clear water lake in southwest Morrison County. Water clarity was excellent for this area of the State with a secchi disk reading of 12.5 feet in mid-August. Fishing structures include steep drop-offs, shallow bays, bars, and weed lines. The lake supports a variety of fish species that may attract anglers such as largemouth bass, northern pike, black crappie, walleye, and bluegill. Pine Lake has an abundant largemouth bass population. While most of the bass in the summer survey were less than 13 inches in length, spring electrofishing sampled quality size fish up to 20 inches. Northern pike numbers appear to have increased since the last survey which could have a negative effect on the fish community balance. Pike between 17 and 22 inches were the most common in the summer survey, but more fish over 30 inches were observed than in previous surveys. Harvest of the smaller pike is encouraged to maintain a healthy pike population of fast growing individuals by reducing competition for food. Black crappie numbers have historically been high in Pine Lake. Most of the crappie observed in the summer survey and spring electrofishing were between 8 and 9.5 inches, but fish up to eleven inches were documented. Anglers seeking walleye will likely have to work hard to find them. Walleye fingerlings are stocked occasionally when there is a surplus of fish, but the low yellow perch population and high northern pike numbers decrease the chance of the stocking producing a fishable walleye population. Some of the panfish species in the lake include bluegill, pumpkinseed sunfish, hybrid sunfish, and green sunfish. The summer nets used are usually not effective at capturing quality size individuals, but some nice bluegill up to 8 inches were observed and 6 to 7.5 inch fish were common in the gill nets. Most of the bluegill caught in the summer survey were in deeper water, outside the beds of vegetation. Two species of bullhead, brown and yellow, were caught in the summer survey. Yellow bullhead were the more abundant of the two species. The yellow bullhead averaged ten inches with some up to 14 inches measured while some of the brown bullhead were up to 15 inches in length.
Proper land use practices in the watershed and by lakeshore owners is encouraged to protect and maintain the water quality as well as the fish habitat in the lake. Protecting fish habitat is important to help sustain the quality and balance of the fish community. Lakeshore owners are also encouraged to leave or establish buffer strips along the shoreline for erosion and pollution control.
