History & Status of the Fishery
Lake Two is located approximately 18 miles E of Ely in the BWCAW. The most common access is by two short portages (30 and 40 rods) in and out of a pond from Lake One. There is also a navigable channel from Lake Three often used by visitors returning from other distant lakes. There are 11 designated USFS campsites surrounding the lake for overnight use. The Lake Two area is one of the most visited in all of the BWCAW.
The Kawishiwi River flows through Lake Two with a large flow. Fish may move freely through the inlet (from Lake Three and Lake Four), but rapids at the two outlets (both to Lake One) prevent upstream fish movement. Lake Two has very soft and infertile water and its shoreline drops off into deep water relatively quickly. The lake bottom near shore is mostly boulder and ledgerock, with small amounts of rubble, gravel, and muck. Aquatic plants are sparse.
The results of the 2016 survey of Lake Two shows a fish community that is similar to past surveys and assessments, however, the total number of fish (16.1/gill net) is at a historical low. Northern pike and walleye were the most common gamefish sampled in 2016. Cisco, lake whitefish, bluegill, rock bass and white sucker were also sampled. One smallmouth bass was sampled in 2016 marking the first time this species was recorded from survey nets in Lake Two. There have been 3 previous surveys of Lake Two with the most recent in 1996.
Northern pike numbers in 2016 (3.9/gill net) were above average compared to other similar lakes in the area and below the historic average of 4.6/gill net for Lake Two. The average pike sampled was 24 inches which is larger than the historic average of 22 inches. The largest pike sampled in 2016 was 36.5 inches long.
Walleye numbers in 2016 (3.4/gill net) were below average compared to other similar area lakes and slightly below the historic average of 3.8/gill net for Lake Two. The average walleye was 14 inches long or about 5 years old which is similar to the historic average of 13.4 inches long. Eighty-six percent of the walleye sampled were ages 3 through 5. The largest walleye sampled in 2016 was 28 inches long.
