Square Lake has an area of 122 acres, and a maximum depth of 7 feet. Square Lake is within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) approximately 2.5 miles by canoe from the Kawishiwi Lake access point via Kawishiwi Lake and the Kawishiwi River. Square Lake is part of the popular non-motorized canoe route from Kawishiwi Lake to Polly Lake.
The 2015 survey was conducted to monitor the fishery and water quality of the lake. The fish populations in Square Lake are maintained by natural reproduction. Twenty-five aquatic plant species were identified although plant density was sparse due to the rock shorelines.
Walleye catch was high relative to lakes with similar water quality and habitat characteristics in northeastern Minnesota. Average length of Walleye sampled was 13.6 inches; the largest fish sampled was 23.6 inches in length. The average weight of Walleye was 0.9 pounds and on par with similar lakes, although growth was slightly below average. Eleven year classes of Walleye were sampled, indicating consistent natural reproduction.
The Northern Pike catch was low relative to similar lakes in northeastern Minnesota. Average length was 14.4 inches with the largest fish sampled having a total length of 17.5 inches. The average weight of Northern Pike was 0.6 lbs. Four year classes were present with fish up to age-4 sampled and growth was average relative to area lakes.
The 2015 survey was the first recorded sampling of Smallmouth Bass in Square Lake. The Smallmouth Bass catch was above average relative to similar lakes in northeastern Minnesota. Compared to other similar area lakes, Smallmouth Bass grew faster than average; average length was 15.0 inches with the largest fish sampled having a total length of 17.1 inches. White Sucker, Green Sunfish, and Rock Bass were also sampled during the 2015 survey.
Square Lake is located on a major canoe route, but could be overlooked by anglers paddling to lakes further in the BWCAW. The lake however, supports a quality fishery for eater size Walleye and also supports an up and coming Smallmouth Bass fishery.
