History & Status of the Fishery

Island Lake (also known as Little Island) is located in southern Hubbard County, seven miles south of Nevis. Island Lake has a surface area of 225 acres and a maximum depth of 32 feet. A county-owned public access is located on the north side of the lake. Island Lake provides angling opportunities for northern pike, largemouth bass, and panfish.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has classified Minnesota's lakes into 43 different types based on physical, chemical, and other characteristics. Island Lake is in lake class 29. Other area lakes in this same classification include; Tenth Crow Wing, Mow, Palmer, and Spirit.

Northern pike abundance (6.7 pike/gillnet) was within the range "typical" for this lake class and similar to past surveys. Anglers will find lots of small "hammer-handle", as average size of northern pike was only 18.7 inches and 1.4 pounds. A few larger northern pike are present, with pike sampled up to 34.9 inches. The northern pike population in Island is limited by high reproduction and recruitment of young pike, and slow growth rates.

Anglers will find good numbers and sizes of largemouth bass in Island. No special sampling such as spring electrofishing has been conducted to adequately assess largemouth bass abundance and size distribution. However, bass abundance was high using standard survey gear (gillnets & trapnets). Island Lake has good water quality, bottom substrate, and aquatic vegetation that will help insure a healthy largemouth bass population.

Island Lake has historically supported good populations of bluegill, pumpkinseed, and black crappie. Anglers will find good numbers of bluegill and pumpkinseed in the 6-7 inch size range. Bluegill growth rates were slow when compared to other area lakes. Black crappie abundance was within the range "typical" for this lake class and similar to past surveys. Anglers will find black crappie in the 9-10 inch size range.

Other species sampled included high numbers of yellow bullhead, and low numbers of brown bullhead, golden shiner, bowfin (dogfish), rock bass, and walleye. Walleye have been sampled in past surveys in very low numbers. Walleye stocking in Island Lake was discontinued after 1976 due to poor survival of stocked fish.
