History & Status of the Fishery
Nelson Lake is a small, shallow lake located within the Niemackl Lakes watershed near the town of Herman. The entire watershed is the focus of a LCMR funded project to improve water quality, enhance fish and wildlife habitat, and increase recreational opportunities in the local area. The purpose of this special assessment was to evaluate the existing fish community in Nelson Lake. The lake is characterized by high turbidity, dense algal blooms, and lack of aquatic vegetation. Existing fish and wildlife habitat is considered marginal. Black bullhead, common carp, and northern pike were the only species captured in survey nets. Black bullhead comprised the majority of the catch, averaging 24.0 fish/gillnet and 6.0 fish/trapnet. Total lengths ranged from 9.0 - 11.0 inches and mean weight was 0.5 pounds. Northern pike catches averaged 2.0 fish/gillnet and 0.7 fish/trapnet. Most of the fish ranged from 20 - 29 inches in total length and mean weight of fish captured was 2.4 pounds. Common carp catch averaged 2.0 fish/trapnet. No common carp were captured in the gillnet. Standard survey gear is not effective in sampling common carp in many lakes, thus common carp may be more abundant than catch indices indicate.
