History & Status of the Fishery
Nisswa Lake is a 207 acre lake located in the city of Nisswa in Crow Wing County. Nisswa is part of the Gull Lake Chain of Lakes. The maximum depth is 23 ft., with 58% of the lake shallower than 15 ft. Water clarity was good, with a secchi depth reading of 13 feet.
Even though walleyes are not stocked directly into Nisswa Lake, they are present due to the connection to Gull Lake where walleye fry are stocked annually. The gillnet catch of 1.3/net in Nisswa Lake was average compared to similar lakes. Past catches have ranged from 0.4/gillnet-1.5/ gillnet. Average size was 20.1 inches and 2.0 lbs.
The northern pike gillnet catch was average at 11.5/net. The northern pike tend to run on the small side, with the average size of 20.1 inches and 2.0 lbs. Northern pike 24 inches and over accounted for just 17% of the catch. A few larger individuals are present, with the largest captured at just over 34 inches in length.
The bluegill trapnet catch was average at 30.0/net. The majority of bluegills captured (73%) were from the 2006 year class. Bluegills seven inches and larger accounted for 47% of the catch. Black crappies were caught in average numbers in both gillnets and trapnets. Black crappies eight inches or larger accounted for 63% of the total catch.
Other fish present in the survey include yellow perch, largemouth bass white sucker, bowfin, common carp, hybrid sunfish, pumpkinseed, rock bass, black bullhead, brown bullhead, and yellow bullhead.
Nisswa Lake is designated as AIS (aquatic invasive species) infested waters because of zebra mussels in Gull Lake. Lake users should inspect and remove any aquatic plants and animals from their watercraft and trailers as well as pull the plug and drain all water from the watercraft, including bilges, livewells and baitwells.
