History & Status of the Fishery

The lake trout catch was within the normal range, in terms of number of fish per net, for lakes of this ecological classs, but was above the normal range in terms of pounds of fish per net. Several year classes were represented, but age-8 and older fish made up half the catch. Lake trout recruitment appeared to be limited, as evidenced by the catch of only one small fish.Rainbow smelt were abundant, and the smelt population appeared to have more large, older individuals than normally observed in Cook County lakes. Rainbow smelt growth appeared to be about average for the area.Northern cisco abundance was about average for lakes of this ecological class, but the net catch appeared to have increased since the 1987 assessment. The lake whitefish catch was similar to the catch in 1987.The smallmouth bass catch was similar to the catch in past assessments. Only two year classes were represented, and growth was about average for this area. Walleye collected in this assessment were mostly from the 1990 year class and had exhibited fast growth by area standards.
