I am looking to get into trapping crayfish this year as I love eating them. Do you guys have any tips on trap placement/design?

Cone trap or minnow traps both work, as previously stated.  we have a shallow creek run through the property up in the northeast part of the state, always get a few rusty's, per night, however in the trout stream we have only caught ( and released ) the small natives.

seafood & fish guts work, but believe or not, stale bread has been best. tried stinky stuff like liverwurst to no avail.

I haven't done it in a few years, you catch 4 a weekend, twice a month in a good summer, then filter em' , and boil them, then freeze em, until you have a boil at the end of season with a  whopping 24 crawdads, wasn't worth it.  Even tried putting more traps out but all that did was instead of having 3 in 1 pot, we had 1 in each of the 3 pots.

We use the minnow traps and usually cut the opening a bit wider to allow bigger ones through. Bait with some sort of fresh meat.

We put the traps in the afternoon and check early morning. Had the best luck in small rocky rivers.

We've actually had better luck netting them as you can selectively target the larger ones and then eat them fresh.

We also used the closed funnel traps for crawfish. They're cheap and work great. Usually tried to find weedlines in deeper water that transitioned ideally to gravel/rocky bottom but muck bottoms worked alright too. Crayfish are master scavengers so if they are in the viscinity, they'll find your traps if you bait them right.

Dont forget to soak them in salt water before cooking!

We have used the commercial wire ones many years ago.
