The problem with building up an existing one that has been damaged, is that you will never attain the original strength of the molded piece. This makes it subject to future damage.
It really doesn't take much at all to knock off the repair, and then your out 200 bucks, and back to where you started.
I think there are exceedingly few shops out there who can make a durable repair.
I really believe that the aftermarket ones that are thru bolted are the way to go.
I know 2 folks who have had their skegs replaced by area shops. Both of them failed in short order, as the "built up" area simply let go again, and they were back to square one, and out 200 bucks.
Not that I'm an expert on this, but repairs such as the link below, seem to be the way to go....

If I broke mine, I would look into this, lots of different places make similar kits.
