Northwoods Mayhem

I’ve been noticing a disturbing trend over the past several years.

I have vacation property in Oconto County, DMU 49A. It has always been my plan to move up there eventually, living as I do (currently) in SE Wisconsin.

It seems that people that come “up north” on the weekends today are no longer interested in the quiet and serenity of the Wisconsin north woods. I have noticed an increasing amount of loud, late-night partying, blasting off fireworks and firecrackers at all hours of the night, and just general all-around mayhem in the north. It’s turned into a free-for-all. My place in SE Wisconsin is FAR quieter and more peaceful than the north, and I find that very sad.

Case in point was this past weekend. Thinking it was going to rain all day Saturday, it seemed like the ideal weekend to go up to the cabin, listen to the Brewers and the Packers on the radio, and sit on the screen porch and smoke fine cigars. Unfortunately my neighbors to the east decided to blast off firecrackers all evening, even late into the night. Somebody to the west was blasting off SERIOUS firecrackers, like M-80s. Then, on the way home, a pick-up truck was tailgating me (even though I was rolling along at quite a brisk pace). They blasted past me and then threw beer bottles out the window.

Do you have to have a large tract of land in order to get any peace and quiet up there?

Is it like this everywhere up north or is this phenomenon just by me?

Perhaps this just bothers me more than it does most folks?

You obviously appreciate it and recognize it.  Too bad not even locals recognize it.

"I'm too sexy for my shirt, too sexy for my shirt..So sexy it hurts"

The last person who saw me dancing shirtless around the campfire would have been 52 years old today.

Poor devil.

Lost his marbles and went prancing through the November deer woods, wearing a strapless blue dress with little yellow flowers, calling out "SHOOT ME!!! SHOOT ME!!!".

Somebody apparently obliged him.

Yes.....Rammstein.

"WEISSES FLEISH!!!"

Even worse than that, I'm a huge "Rammstein" fan.

Really? Some how I pictured you as Right Said Fred fanboy. Dancing around the campfire singing, "I'm too sexy for my shirt, too sexy for my shirt..So sexy it hurts"

i like metalicca and g n r. Even worse than that, I'm a huge "Rammstein" fan. Maybe my noisy neighbors up north might like some nice.... Rammstein Ein Mensch brennt Rammstein Fleischgeruch liegt in der Luft Rammstein ein Kind stirbt Rammstein die Sonne scheint At 2 o'clock in the blessed AM. But that would make me a "knob", wouldn't it. (Just wanted you guys to know that I like ME some loud and heavy industrial metal AT THE APPROPRIATE PLACE AND TIME.)

I have 2 places. One in Shawano co. one in Price Co. It has gotten much quieter on both parcels. Both have river frontage. We used to see canoes all the time in Shawano. This weekend we saw 3 people acting like idiots and swearing. hen they were gone. The next night it was the local home across the road acting like drunken idiots. In Price Co. it is even quieter than Shawano and getting even quieter. It is river instead of lake frontage though.

We went ice fishing one day to get out of town and enjoy some peace and quite andhopefully get a few fish. This guy on the ice a hundred yards away was blasting his boom box and thought everyone wanted to hear it. My buddy walked over there and told him to turn it down and explained that every one out here does'nt want to listen to that thing. He did turn it down and we enjoyed the peace and quite of the ice

I've seen some bad, but by far more good behavior on and around the water.

But has anybody been on the water of Castlerock and listened to the music coming out of the "Dirty Turtle"? I have camped at the State Park many times. The camping experience is perfect, except for the Dirty Turtle blasting music over multiple square miles of water and the entire west side of the campground.

The campground has a little message, "on weekends you may hear...". You will hear it all right. Hope you like Metallica and Guns 'n Roses classics. Once I remember "Sledgehammer", maybe the worst rock song ever, blasting across the lake.

I have nothing against the place otherwise. They sell ice and gas and cause no daytime problems. But they wreck the night for any camper, and we're probably four miles away. It suprises me that the vacation and permanent residents tolerate it.

I guess its a matter of attitude. There is a cabin across the town road that I live on. Don't know the owner real well, but I have talked to him in the past and he seemed like a nice king of young feller Friday night they pull in with five pickups, all the toys and lots of beer. The group partied hard all weekend, making a fair amount of noise. Actually, I enjoyed listening to them, kind of reminded me of my younger days some forty plus years ago, and I knew they would be gone by Monday night. Monday as they were packing up the owner comes over with two bottles of wine from the Lakewood winery, really good stuff, and hands then to me saying "this is for putting up with us all weekend. Thought that was a really nice gesture on his part. In another incident this weekend, the wife and I were invited to an old college friend's cabin for a fish boil. The shortest way to get to his place is to take the fire lanes through the national forest. So we come up on a SUV parked on the side of the dirt road. Well, to put it delicately, I think that most of the ladies that I know of that live around here know how to answer natures call other that hanging on to the front bumper of their SUV. Wife said she hasn't heard me laugh so hard in a long time. So, as I said to begin with, it's a matter of attitude, I enjoy the sights and sounds of the north woods, both natural and man made.

It's a shame that some people can not police themselves and have to be told what is acceptable and what is NOT acceptable. It's not really that difficult, just a little common sense. If you want people to respect you, you need to show a little respect for them. TF

I'm *almost* kind of glad you guys have had similar experiences up there. At least I know it "isn't just me".

I had a grand time this weekend in SE Wisconsin. Almost idyllic. After Saturday's rain and fog, Sunday and Monday were beautiful. Quiet. Peaceful. And I live right in the middle-class, mixed-ethnicity suburbs. I think I smelled some brats grilling Sunday night.

Almost enough to make me dump the place in 49A right now.

Just absolutely sick of it.

We do some late season deer drives in 49a so yesterday a buddy and I went out to do some early season scouting. It was unreal, every two track out there was tore up, even the gravel roads were in such piss poor shape we had to just crawl along. Four wheelers and sidexsides were everywhere spitting gravel and littering like it was no big deal. Ended up with a chipped windshield thx to some throttle bound thrill jockey. We didn't spend alot time down there for obvious reasons. Finished the day off heading farther north where it's considerably quiter. And that"s my advice to you Rainbow move farther north.

The ATVers are driving me nuts. They rip down the road by our cabin all the time. I recently had some dozer work to construct some trails for me and purposely had him start them about 30 yards off the road so that maybe they wouldn't be as noticeable. Went and pulled my camera off one of the trails tonight and there were three different ATV's trespassing in two weeks time. One of them was just a hour before I got there. Luckily for them I can't see registration on any of them or I would be going straight to the sheriff department tomorrow morning.

I apologize if I gave the impression that I do not know these people. I've spoken with the old man; he's OK, and his wife is OK. They obviously don't want to hear that their son is a loud-mouth drunk with a SEVERE emotional disability. May god have mercy on his wife and kids.

I'm no hypocrite. I'm not going to go over there and act all friendly with these people.

So here I am, 3:30PM on Friday before Labor Day weekend, and I can't go up to my place. I already KNOW it is going to be bedlam.

I appreciate all the friendly responses that I got both in the forum and via PM. I sincerely thought this was an issue of substance to all of us who love the outdoors. I'm tired of thinking about it now.

Have an pleasant holiday weekend all.

in your prior post it sounded like you didn't know them. then your only choice is to call the cops until something gives. does this partying on the weekends bother the year round residents? then maybe they should join you in calling the cops. to stop this if it's that big of nuisance. i'm just trying to get the whole story. there is usually two sides and then the truth some where in the middle of a story. the place i go the neighbors come over late at night when their party winds down and have a beer with us. they have no problem with what we do. so i'm not nuisance where im at. its what most people around us do. if some one would have a big problem with the music or whatever else we do i would be more quiet and change so that i would not be disturbing the peace.
