Definitely with seaducks of any sort ge buffs or squaws. They are white magnets. But for a general diver spread. Less white looks x100 more realistic. Idk about drake %'s nor do I care. Often I will glass 3 or more species in a raft. If u don't bieleve me that less white is better. Glass a raft and compare. I'd never try uv paint. How goofy is that.
"I just read on Delta WaterF that 70% of scaup are drakes."
Yes, but how many of those drakes are immature and have the appearance of a hen on the water? My buddy has been tracking his ducks like a obsessive compulsive statistician for the last couple of years and I was surprised at how many immature vs. mature drakes he has been shooting when it comes to bluebills.
UV is a gimmick paint. Every year people brag about how you don't need fancy decoys and that they still kill em over bleech bottles blah blah blah.
Fact is that millions of ducks are killed yearly. If UV was the end all be all, wouldnt everyone be using it? I focus more on just black/white in general based on what the day look likes. Sun vs clouds, light vs dark water.
Good low overcast day and black pops better than white.
Also while watching golden eyes after the season last year, drakes out numbered hens 3:1. It wasn't that late that it was breeding time, but all my experience with golden eyes lean heavily towards drakes.
If u wanna get rid of the ones without heads, ill buy them all.
Also remember when your painting them.. its WAY more realistic to have fewer drakes then hens.. You definatly need some catchy white. but brown and black decoys cast a better shadow and are way more realistic and visible to birds from a distance..
Ive been adding nothing but hens for a few years now.. I also fell victim to the more "WHITE" is better.
I think restle is more durable, like drive a truck over durable, the paint only wears on the high points..
I hate home made burlap jobbies, they seem to sofen, or wear at the tail so u have burlap coming un-done.
All old foamers i get, and evan some pink foamers get 2-3 rolls of dust. Smoothing them out even just the sides, with fiberglass body filler makes for a really smooth looking nice decoy.
Its easily as durable as burlap. Honestly, burlap isnt like some sort of armor for your decoy. A shotgun blast is still going to do damage. Herters are tough enough without the burlap or restle. The weaknesses are paint and the heads. Those same weaknesses remain with whatever coating you put on them. Paint will still scuff and scratch and you will still need to repaint.
Don't beat the hell out of your decoys and you will be just fine.
