Looking to purchase a Walleye Rod and Reel Combo(vertical jigging) for a gift. The person is a newbie to the sport and therefore I'm thinking of a budget buy combo. Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, what type of line and jig colors should I purchase?

My guess is the line issue is from too much line. I typically will leave 1/16 to 1/8 inch of lip open on the spool and don't have any issues.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions in regards to my question. I just purchased the Pflueger(6') combo at Gander Mountain and I'm hoping my nephew likes it. I'm also hoping that the moderate action of the rod will be okay for jigging. Should I have bought a lighter action rod/reel combo? Two more questions, can you tie on a fluorocarbon leader with the 8lb(walleye specific) test line and still jig(minnows) with success? He was hoping to catch a pike in the mix as well. Also, why does the line keep "spooling over into the back of the reel?" Is this because of to much line on the reel? Thanks again for all the help and good luck on the water!

Cabela's Fish Eagle II combo. 6'6", ML action with a Shimano Symetre reel. This is a good all around combo that can be used for vertical jigging, slip-bobbering, fan-casting, back-trolling with a lindy rig....whatever your pleasure. I would recommend 6-8 pound Trilene XL for slip-bobbering and maybe fan-casting. If you are going to be fan casting, vertical jigging or back trolling using Fireline or Spiderwire from the reel to a barrel swivel will add sensitivity. However, you will need mono from swivel to the hook.

If its a budget rig for a newbie, for a decent reel I would look at a Pflueger President 25 or 30 size you might be able to find last years model on sale. For a rod there are Lot's of good rods for a vertical jigging rod a fast action 6to 6.6 ft.Bass pro has a nice series of walleye rods at a decent price, I have one of there 6ft jig rods and there very nice I think there around 90 bucks.I personally if you want to save money though go on the bargain basement on the Cabela's web sight and look around I have picked up some great deals on there I have picked up cabela's XML jigging rods for as low as 30bucks.For line for a newbie I would go with a low stretch mono Trilene Sensation is a great mono for jigging and is relatively cheap. For jigs get an assortment 1/16 to 1/2 in white and yellow that would be good for a start.

6'6" IM7 ML rod with Spyder Wire 8# test/1# dia would be perfect. The IM7 along with the super line will give great sensitivity and feel. Super lines don't 'stretch' so the flexibility or 'give' of the IM7 will compensate, and provide less chance of breaking the rod, while still giving outstanding sensitivity with the add use of the super line, dispite only being IM7 as compared to IM8 or IM9 (in the same brand). The 1# dia. line will also allow for longer cast. 1# test dia. will cast an 1/8oz jig further than 8# test mono. The 8# test will also break before the rod, if the rod is rated for 8# test line (usualy rated 6lb-10lb test line in that configuration, size, and graphite content). Your best bang for the buck is a Gander Mountin Guide Series IM7 rod with a Guide series size 30 reel. This bought seperately (if not availible in a combo) would be the same set up as a Pflueger Trion combo. The rod is (likely) a higher end Shakespeare, and reel is a Pflueger Trion, made for gander at a reduced cost. They should have racks of combos in the store. An IM6 M action rod would also fit the bill. Pink, Orange, and yellow jig heads are about all you need to fish the Winnebago system. If casting from shore, 1/8oz will do just fine. If jigging current in a river from a boat or bridge, then 1/4oz to 1/2oz. I would suggest a pack of 1/8oz, a pack of 1/4oz, and a pack of 1/2oz jigs in mixed colors (pack) like Northland Gumball Jigs should do the trick. The above combo will run about $50-$70 depending on IM7 (ML) or IM6 (M), in a combo or bought seperately. If you were thinking more along the lines of "real Budget" then the Abu Garcia Ultra Cast Spinning Combo in 6'6" M is a good bet. There on sale at Gander with free shipping for $39. Pick up some 6lb test Sufix Elite linefor $7 while your at it. The Spyder Wire will run you $15. http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=Abu_Garcia_Ultra_Cast_Spinning_Combo&i=435572&aID=504AC1&merchID=4006 Another good site is http://www.ffo-tackle.com/ProductDirectory.cfm?PassProdCat2=Spinning&PassProdCat1=Reels&SearchLevel=3∏Brand=&Keyword=&Sort=ProdPrice&Type=ASC
