Slip Bobber Rod

I want to pick up a couple slip bobber rods for the spring.  I was looking at the 8'6 BPS rods.

My question is since you don't need a lot of sensetivity since you are fishing with a float, has anyone ever used a Ugly Stik Steelhead rod for this.  Only $59 from Cabelas and you can get them in 8"6.  Any reason why I would want to avoid them?

I've never seen a broken Ugly Stick.

Longer rods will equal better casting distance and more line pick up on the hookset...plus it I pull light lindy rigs or slow death rigs with it it will keep it further from the boat.

Went to Gander Last night and picked up a medium action, 2 piece Shakespeare Agility in 8'6. Should work just fine for slip bobbers and slow death and light lindy rigs I am thinking.

I'm not new to it, just always used my jigging rods for it. Well my new jigging rods have micro guides and the slip bobber stop snags on them so I am looking for a cheaper alternative. Something I could pull slow death rigs on occasion would be nice too. I think I am going to go with the 9 foot ugly stik. Rated for up to 3/4 oz so I can use it for deadsticking, slip bobbering, and live bait rigs too. And it won't break the bank. Also since sensitivity isn't absolutely critical with those applications the Ugly stik for $40 is a good buy I think.

i like 7'6 light action rods. started with eagle claw crappie rods and have added from there. they are fiberglass and stand up really well to abuse. dont go cheap on reals or line. also 8' and longer start to cause problems with storage and handling in vehicles. match action to how heavy the cover is you are fishing no trouble landing northerns and muskies to mid 30 lengths

I still like some sensitivity in a slip bobber rod for this reason.  Often a fish will pull a float under and you don't see it, or when fishing larger minnows you have to let them take it longer.  The float is gone, and you don't know what direction the fish went, so it's nice to have some feel to pick up all the slack without pressuring the fish so much they drop the bait.

For this reason I sill prefer a good quality rod, probably a 7'0" Med-lite.  Then you also have a more versatile rod in the boat that can fish bait rigs, light jigs, and small cranks too.

Just some thoughts.

Thanks,

the 8''6" ugly stick will work fine.  you need the length for a sweeping hookset with mono - especially in deeper water
