Just realized that I did not answer your question. I find mine in a lot of grass cover but also find a lot in the grass that borders the woods. Not sure what they are called but there are these red bushes the have long stick like things that go straight up. My dog consistently kicks them up there. I never find released birds in cattails. Not sure why because I know they love them out west...might just be the area I hunt.
This year Ive shot/seen 90 percent of the birds within a 200 hard radius of the parking lot that they are released in. This isnt right after release...there have been numerous days Ill get out walk all over and see many many hunted OUT in the field only to come back and find birds in the parking lot. They just dont see to go far. Check the lots and feathers will usually let you know something was released there.
If you do go to Mazo PM me. Ill tell you a spot that I consistently see/flush birds. Not a big secret as many guys go there. Just would rather not post unless you have a GPS N453 323 455 E 400 934 300
(kidding about the coordinates)
Final thought....again assuming no dog. Id stick to ditches as well especially if you can find a ditch that runs alongside a gravel road. I see them on the road probably 1 out of every 3 trips
Ive used Mazo a lot. Do you have a dog. Sorry to say but without a dog your success is going to be very very limited. These birds can cover ground like you wouldnt believe. I only know this because often my dog takes off on a bird and ends up 100 + yards in front of me. Without him I would have no clue the bird was even there.
Your best chances without a dog is to wait till it snows and then hit the open pockets of cover. Also find tracks and walk the areas with tracks.
Bass fishing, I cannot help you around the Dane Co area but here is a link for you to maybe help you out a little.
