Little more than 2 weeks before another bird season getting pumped. It kinda of sucks though in southern part of state we have the anterless hunt during opening weekend for pheasant. It makes no sense to have guys with rifles hunting deer and guys with shotguns and dogs out together. Just saying

Went to the hunt club yesterday to clean up some scratch birds. It was fun. Frost on everything and the switch grass is still standing 6ft tall. Thicker than all get out. I didn't bother putting a bell on the dog and I regret it because I had a hard tome finding her when she went on point. Knocked down three roosters. Spring is coming, they are already RUNNING.

Saw quite a few pheasants and lots of tracks yesterday rabbit hunting in Winnebago county. The beagle flushed a hen and a beautiful rooster. Still a few around.

Im really concerned with the lack of hens out there. That doesnt bode well for 2012

Heard some roosters cackling away in the Zeloski Marsh. You better bring your hip boots if you  want to try to get them. They were back in the nasty wet stuff.

I agree with your post up to one point.  Iowa is no longer a place to go for birds.  Bad winters and even worse springs have caused the population to go south.  One last hunt for me in the am.  Fresh snow(go figure the last day of the season)  Have a great New Year everyone!

Wild bird shot on Monday. Also saw 2 other roosters and 3 grouse. Good way to end the season.

Maybe it's just me but I think splitting up the season and charging twice for a stamp is a horrible idea. If you want to be gauranteed birds and you're willing to pay for them then go to the game farm. Last time I checked, hunting is about getting outdoors and spending time with family, friends, and your dog. It's not always about the harvest. If you expect to shoot a pheasant in Wisconsin every time you go out on public or private land, your'e living in the wrong state. I'd suggest moving to Iowa or the Dakota's if you're expectations remain the same. I'm lucky enough throughout the entire season to be able to hunt DNR released birds and native birds in my area. I know that not everyone has that luxury in the state but I think the given propositions are a little jaded. I would agree that it would be nice to have some birds planted later in the year after deer season but in no way shape or form do I want to see more than 1 Bong in the state, that place is a nightmare and a joke.

Having a late season would be a good idea.  Have you attempted to contact the person at the DNR who heads up the stocking program?  I lost his contact infomraiton but it is available fromt he WDNR website.  He helped me out with some issues earlier this year and seemed to be recepitve.  It may be worth while letting him know and get the ball rolling.

Would be nice if they converted a few areas late season to make them like Bong area. I would gladly pay a daily fee if there were birds released every day.  In fact Id pay a lot more than the three dollars to have a chance at some birds.

too much $$ to keep them alive that long? How about hatching them a month later

Flyguy, I agree it would be nice to get out over the Holidays as most of us have some time off from work. That is why I'm going to get some birds from a friend that raises Phesants this Friday and do some training on my brothers land. I need to get out at least 1 more time and so do my dogs and this way I know for sure that we will find birds seeing I will be planting them for the dogs to find.

If anyone would like to pick up a few birds I know my friend has a few left that he would like to get rid of, just message me and I can give you his contact info. I live in the Racine area.

Flyguy, it costs way too much money to keep the birds alive that long...  We are lucky enough they even leave some money in the budget to release any birds yet...

Just voicing my frustrations....Walked my butt off yesterday...dog went birdie once but came up empty handed.  I wish they could save some birds for the last few weeks.  Seems like christmas time would provide great opportunities for a lot of pheasant hunters to get out for one last time. Seems like everyone has at least one extra day off, kids on college break, etc.  Any reasons why they dont hold onto a few to release later?
