3/26/12 @ 2:30 PM
i have heard 2 diffrent things, i have heard they go by the weather and temps, and i have also heard they go by the time of day, i would personally think that it would depend on the time of day by the way theyre dealing with their roost every night. what have you guys heard?

I watched a show last week on the biology of a turkey. A few guys with the NWTF were explaining alot about the turkey breeding cycle. They said that the length of day is what triggers the hormones in both the hens and gobblers. A hen only needs to breed once during the season even though they usually do it more than that. When she is ready she will create a nest and drop 1-2 eggs a day for 12-14 days. On average a hen will drop about 10-12 eggs in her clutch. Once she decides her clutch is complete she will sit on the nest and begin to incubate them. During this time she does not leave the nest for about 20 days. She is on the nest night and day except for a few short periods of time to eat and drink. Hens can store a Toms sperm for up to 2.5 months to lay eggs when the time is right.
The name of the show was Turkey Call and is run on the Pursuit Channel. The info above was from these 2 guys from the NWTF.
