Hacked out some honey rounds today
4/16/12 @ 9:17 PM
Used my antique tool to make honey comb rounds for the first time this year. Yeah, for those in the know, it is way way too early for harvesting honey here in Wisconsin. But this was honey saved in my freezer from the fall season. It was meant to give back to the bees for food to raise brood for the spring build up.
But the warm late winter temperatures has both most plants blooming early, or has given the normally cold-blooded honey bees a chance to work early pollen and nectar sources. It is hard to believe, but the ornamental apricot tree in my backyard is already finished with their blossoms - with the bees already having took full advantage!
So now my honey bees do not need the stored honey and I begin the work to harvest it all. I took out two frames of comb honey today and made comb rounds, gently pacing them in small jam jars, then chopping and smashing the remainder and straining the honey from the wax. Gently pouring the honey into the jars with the comb finished the process.
A very interesting side note: one of the frames had half with very dark honey. This was gathered very late in the year during October, and since I am quite new to beekeeping, I am not entirely sure what nectar source it came from. It has the color of bamboo honey but has a licorice taste that some have told me could be buckwheat.
You can discern the dark from the light honey in the pictures and video posted below.
I made a very relaxing video concerning the process and uploaded it to You Tube. I highly recommend you watch it!
