Just wondering how you guys feel about bulldog fishing for pike

I agree, any toothy critter is hard on Bulldogs. I use a key chain thing that I got a few years ago that heats up to thaw frozen locks in the winter, holding it against the severed tail for a couple of seconds melts the pieces together pretty well.

Let me tell you, they catch fish! But I have had horrible luck with the tails ripping off after a small pike or two, and at $12 a pop, I'd rather just throw a much more durable bait like a spinnerbait or bucktail.
