Does anybody ever use tip ups for panfish? It seems like it could work, to try and search for fish.

Get Hooked

One thing I learned when fishing Perch with tip-ups, is to have the hook closest to the head of the minnow as possable. The Perch eat it head first. And remeber what your fishing, A slight hookset is all thats needed, its not a Pike! LOL This year I'm gonna try more spoons on my tip-ups.

I use my Polar tip-ups for panfish. they dont have as much pressure when a fish is on which is nice for panfish. Just tie a 1 foot leader of 2 pound test on the whatever other kind of line you got on your tip-ups and fish with a minnow. Give it a little time to run though because he might hot have the hook in his mouth.

small to medium fatheads for crappie and perch. I have caught several nice crappie using medium shiners but a warden may not be too impressed after game fish has closed. As far as blugill I wouldnt concider using one.

I would have to say that, except for perch, tip downs are much better for panfish, sepecially crappie. I do have good success in March fishing for junbo perch with regular tip ups

I have had great luck w/arctic fire tip-ups. 15# tip-up line to a swivel 4# floro leader, #14/16 hook, very small split shot w/ a glow bead on top about 4" above the hook. when setting don't groove the flag and put it so the rotation triggers going down the flag shaft not up(BIG DEAL). I also use a slip not for my line marker. With this rig I have no need for any boxes or stands and work dam good for walleye as well.

I fish A LOT of crappies, and I've tried a lot of methods to find the best way to catch crappies, and this is what I've come up with: Jigging is by far the best method, but there are definite instances that i can recall where i was outfished by my own tip up/tip down. I use a tip down in instances where i am fishing outside of my shack and i can get there quickly. Simply deadstick a minnow at preferred depth, and if the fish are there and active, you may not even be able to jig, you might be running after tip downs all day! I've used a few different types of tip ups which incorporate the rod into the tip up. HT Makes one that is the most accessible, and I've seen and caught some fish with them, but i'm not a huge fan of the HT. I feel that they take too much effort on the fish to trip the flag. I got a hold of a product called the "dragonflag" from a guy on here (its a prototype of a tip up he's been working on for a good amount of time now, and I have had great success with that. It acts as a tip up and a hole cover, plus you get to fight them with a rod which is nice as well. It works very well. I've tried rigging regular tip ups for panfish as well. Beaver dams, Frabill Pro Therms. They both work, but they seem to take so much effort on the fishes part to trip the flag that they generally spit the bait when they feel the tension. I have had this work beautifully fishing perch and crappies when the fish are bigger, and/or are very active and inhaling baits. I Run an aberdeen hook tied to 4 lb mono for a leader, then attached to a small barrel swivel and then your normal braided tip up line. Set on the weakest setting you can, and be sure to back spool before you pull tip up off ice. This method has worked as well. I also have a few "box" tip ups that I made myself. I made these years back, and they too work great. The nicest part of box tip ups is the fact that there is NO tension on them, or as little as you'd like them to have. Plus the hole stays open most of the time, and if it doesn't you can put a soda can with a candle in it, and that will keep the hole open. These are all the methods that I've tried. They can be great on the right day. I wouldn't be affraid to try anything for pannies. I've tip down fished for gills using waxies as well. they all work. You just have to try it, and you will figure out what you like best. Personally it depends on the day. I've spend days using the dragon, box tip ups, tip downs, regular tip ups with great success, but my biggest success comes from jigging. But don't let that phase you... give them all a try! Wow, sorry so long winded, i got in the zone there. Hope this helps a little?? PM me if you have any other questions.
