Spring Crappies

Well, the late ice has passed and the early spring crappies are on the move shallow. With the temps. starting to heat up, it's time to head out and start looking in the areas where there migrate to. First, you really want to get the following things together first and what I mean by that is that get your rods, new line and grease up the reels so you're not disappointed with what might go wrong with your gear. This as happened to me a few times, just because of the excitement of getting out there. I usually start hitting the shoreline bite first before I get out in the boat and can be a great bite if you hit it just right. Once that water has time to heat up the crappies will filter in the shallow flats and in areas where pencil weeds start to grow. But, the dead pencil weeds that are folded over and broken is where I will start. And of course, every year they are there and the best times to get them is early morning and than in the afternoon to evening. This is when they are feeding until they are ready to spawn. The last two weeks has been just nuts because the temps. first started to warm quickly, but then stabilized where the water temp. has been in the 56-59 degree range for the past week. This has been a slow spawn, but for crappie anglers, we love it. The one thing that I promote heavy is catch and release during this time of year. Big slabs are in and they should be let go to let them do there thing. If your going to keep fish, be selective and keep the ones that are 10-11 inches. Until next time,be safe and I will see you on the water.

I do. The crappies head out deeper and it is fun all summer long.
