A few nice fish from 2013.
Overall we caught 26 musky in 23 days of musky fishing, with 11 of those 23 days being complete skunks. We spent 7 of those 11 skunk days on new lakes we never tried before, and that was part of the problem. We also spent 8 of those 11 skunk days fishing during and after cold fronts, with one of the fronts being exceptionally severe and lasting 4-5 days. That was our worst stretch of the season. All 23 days were spent fishing "small" waters, ranging from 100-750 acres, with most days spent on 100-500 acres. The biggest fish we caught was on a lake smaller than 300 acres.
This past summer and fall was the first time we had a chance to do some "serious" fishing, logging in 23 days through the course of multiple trips up north. We were able to pull off two one-week trips up north during the summer, and that's where we got 15 of the 23 days in. Unfortunately, the nasty 4-5 day cold front occurred on one of those two trips, and it killed the fishing. Just bad luck with weather on that one. We had car and trailer problems on the other trip, and that prevented some fish during key windows in the morning and evening. Over the course of the season we squandered seven key windows during specific days due to various issues. Extremely frustrating.
If I lived up north and had easy, constant access to waters, along with knowledge of local patterns, I'd be much, much more successful than this. Makes the trips all that more special since you have to work harder.
That concludes our WI musky Season for 2013! Another excellent year with 98 muskies in the boat (94 casting and 4 on suckers); 51 of which were client caught fish! Breakdown was 35 fish over 40"; of which 10 were over 45" and 5 were over 47"; 3 over 48 with largest being a 49.5. All fish measured on a bumpboard and taken from the waters of Vilas/Oneida/Iron/Price Counties.
Congrats to Client Michelle on her new personal best that came on a boatside strike Oct 18th. Also Congrats to Clients Kevin and Brian on a nice chunky low 40s that came on a half day evening trip Oct 19th!
Water Temps are at 49-51 and the fish are moving progressively deeper though some shallow fish are still active. Bucktail bite (except very large size) is off for most part and large jerkbaits/rubber/wood baits will be the best bet until ice up. Sucker bite going strong for those who choose to run them. Most of our sucker action came in the top 5 feet of the water column. Expect that to move deeper as water temps continue to drop with the exception of fish that follow casted baits and hit boatside meat.
Best of luck for the rest of 2013!
PS Congrats to your son on the first musky muskytracks!
A few more recent muskies with clients. Fall bite has been consistent as we approach turnover in the smaller lakes.
Fall fatties are on the chew! Big fish are hungry and on the move with the stormy weather and full moon. All of our action was from shallow weeds. A mix of blades/jerkbaits produced a massive double last night on a half day outing with client Dave up to 47.25". Had action from several other fish. The 47.25 was the 200th Northern WI musky in my boat since May of 2012! Awesome fish and a crazy story behind how it was caught! Great night on the water! Good luck to all of the duck hunters this weekend and tight lines.
Vilas/Oneida Counties
A few from the northwoods these past few days. Two 1st muskies and a beast of a personal best for clients! Best of luck this fall. Keep the pics coming!
Nice fish guys! This is my 46 caught on North Twin Sunday September 8th during the Holiday Lodge Tournament, swam away like a champ. She was caught in 3 feet of water on a bucktail. We fished Thursday through Sunday on some other lakes as well and fishing was tough, raised a few others and partner lost a low 30's. Good luck this fall.
Vilas/Oneida county musky bite remains good! Improving conditions this week will have fish on the move! Fall is just around the corner and fish are getting chunky. Best of luck this fall!
