Making a drill attachment for my hand auger?
To those of you who have access to a lathe & drill press. 1" Dia. steel stock at least 12" to??. Measure down at least 2". Mike inside Dia. of auger shaft and machine the steel rod to that Dia. (different augers might have different Dia's). On the end with the 1", drill in about 1" and tap a1/2" (for those with 1/2" drills) machine thread. Grind flat sides on each side of the 1" for easy removal with a wrench. On other end drill a hole to accomodate the wing nut(I used a case hardened hex bolt,if the rod is a sloppy fit it will snap off the alluminum wing nut,bye-bye auger). No need to tap as augers have thread blocks welded to the outside.
To remove the chuck, open all the way, remove screw inside,it has a reverse thread. Lock into the chuck the big-est allen wrench you can find. Have someone hold the drill on the end of a sturdy table or bench with the chuck over the edge. Give the allen wrench a SHARP rap with a heavy long bar or rod, the key is SHARP,two or three raps usually does the trick. The chuck will unscrew like any normal bolt wouldl.
Screw rod on, 1/2 turn of locking, attach auger, power spin, it will lock auger auger securely onto drill thread. I like to put a dab of grease on the drill thread,it just makes it easier to remove at the end of the year.
I made mine out of 18mm solid round stock steel....put it in the lathe and turned down one end to fit a 1/2 chuck, then flipped it and drilled out and tapped a 9/16-18 hole and then on the sides drilled two(2) 1/4" holes....works great I will post pics tomorrow for ya... I just use a piece of wood for a stop if it comes un-chucked
here is a video of mine in action... this is with a 7" auger.... this year I rigged mine up with a dummy battery and wired to vex batteries to 24v , should beable to drill all day long and keep up with the gas augers no prob
I think this is the 10th thread about this topic. You can spend $20 on an attachment, or spend $3 on a 11/16 box hole saw...they sell them at farm & fleet. Works the same way, and with the money you save it will pay for your beer for a day on the ice. See older posts for instructions and pictues. Using a 6" blade and keeping the battery's warm with hand warmers is key. I can get 50 holes out of each battery.
