S&W Shield 9mm. It's narrow grip is a big comfort advantage and it's reliable. 9mm is the biggest caliber I can comfortably carry. And, you need to be honest with yourself when it comes to carrying. Comfort is a big deciding factor if you grab your gun every day or not. If I could carry the Glock .45 comfortably I would. It's my favorite caliber and Glock's are my favorite guns to shoot. But I can't, and a 9mm on me is better than a .45 sitting back at the house.
S&W .44 Mag revolver w/4" barrel. Why? BECAUSE SHOOTING MORE THAN ONCE IS JUST SILLY!!!!
Also have a .380 Browning Hi-Power that actually fits QUITE nicely in a cowboy boot.
Please keep In mind I'm 6'8" and 260-270 lbs so a large frame handgun does not really "stand out"!!!
Around the house there is a 3" mag 870 12 ga. with #2's and slugs under the bed and of course there is my wife with her beloved "Lady"smith 529 in .357 among other things.
As the signs says, "CAUTION: anyone found here at night will be found here in the morning!"
I carry a 9mm and here's why. I carry a Diamondback DB9, it's small, lightweight, and easy to carry under a simple overshirt. It carries 6 in the magazine and one in the chamber, is easy to shoot and easier to carry.
I've owned .40 S&W and I've had the chance to buy several compact .45 ACP handguns. And still I carry 9mm. Why? I have several different handguns and I reload for 9mm....
And I hit what I shoot at with my 9mm's..... That means a lot to me.

Cold Front, I'm guessing your gun is actually a 8-3/8" barrel not a 9" and yes there is still a demand for them especially if your's is an older model that is pinned and recessed. What that means is that there is a pin through the frame locking the barrel threads and the cylinder has resesses counter bored in the chambers so that the rim of the cartridge sits flush.
I have not got around to getting my permit yet but probably will. I have a SW nickel plated .44 mag with a 9 inch barrel at home. Obviously, it is not something I will be carrying around. I plan to trade it for a more compatible weapon. Is there much demand for .44's anymore or is the market really focusing on the concealed carry type weapons? Thanks. Mrt.
9mm. Gets the job done and isn't too big. Can easily conceal in basketball shorts too in the S&W Shield
"I didn't intend to say 389".
LOL, JimLi, .389, .390, whatever it takes..
Any of those calibers are just fine for self defense, and as ditto said even smaller calibers too if the proper ammo is used. "One shot stop" is one of the biggest loads of horse**** to ever come out. Never seen or attended training where a shoot until your threat is no longer a threat wasn't utilized. Meaning you shoot as many rounds as it takes to stop the threat. If you feel better carrying a.357, .40,.44,.45 or whatever go for it. if you are fine with a .32, .38,.380, or 9mm that's great too. Carry what you are comfortable with and fits your body type, typical wardrobe type, and most importantly what you personally shoot best. ALOT of practice and training will go quite a bit further in saving your life should you ever need to defend yourself than what caliber you carry ever will.
I personally carry a glock 26 as my EDC gun. I have the most training and experience with the glock platform and I shoot a small 9mm faster and better than a bigger caliber in a small gun like that. I also prefer a few more rounds as I feel if I ever need to shoot that under stress a good portion of my rounds will not find home. that's my 2 cents worth.
