I have 2- 1000ft spools of 30 lb wire to go onto new reels, the question I have is should I put mono on for a backer or is 1000 ft of wire enough on the reel? Thanks for any info you can provide!

I run the Talora rods with Diawa SG-27 reels(Yes, I said TWO seven)spooled up with 1000' of Malin 30# wire and no backer. Just put a couple wraps of electrical or duct tape on the spool before putting the wire on so that it doesn't slip. It's an awesome combo, much better than a couple others that I have had on the boat in the past.

My old wire reels had dacron as the backing, any opinions on what is better, mono or dacron?

30lb wire. Use Malin wire. it's the good stuff. @ Sslayer, you are probably right about not deploying it out past 300, but what happens when a king rips off 200ft of wire, sure would not want a knot from mono to wire between me and the fish. Spool up the way the pros do it. 1000ft spool of wire per reel.(more pricey, but it will be any way once you have to respool when that knot breaks everytime a fish gets out past 300. It's the right way to do it. You will need mono backing, so if you have 2 reels that are the same brand and size with line counters, spool the wire first, then tie the backing in and fill up the spool on reel#1, note the amount of mono taken in by zeroing out the counter once the wire is on and starting from zero to monitor backing length, then transfer the line over to the other reel by simply reeling it over to the other reel. Then you will have all the numbers you need for reel #2.

I am just wondering what size (lbs) wire people use for wire dipsys. I have old wire rods, but replacing wire on them and I am not sure what lb wire was on them before. 20lb, 30lb, or 40lb?

I would recommend putting 150yds. of 25# Big Game or similar mono and then add the wire until the spool is full. Having the spool diameter as large as possible will allow maximum line retrieval. Start with 150 yds of mono on the first reel and adjust how much mono goes no the second reel. I truly doubt you'll deploy more than 300' of wire when setting the dipsy to the desired depth. Good Luck

T_T, You might as well pick up another identical set up right now as you are going to like it a lot and want one on the other gunnel!

Just picked up a wire setup from Howie's Tackle in Sturgeon Bay. Shimano Talora Wire rod with swivel tip and an Okuma 30 convector reel spooled with 1000 ft of wire(mono backing too). Can't wait to try it out this spring/summer.

Does anyone have experience with Okuma Blue Diamond roller rods? I know they were discontinued but have an opportunity to buy some. How do these compare to the Taloras? Any issues with these rods? Why were they discontinued? Thanks for any info.

I've been using a JR's wire dipsy rod and love it. Great action and no rollers or swivel tip for the line to fall off of. A pretty good price also. http://www.jrstackle.com/rod_salmon.html
