He doesn't use a firearm though. He has a crossbow permit due to a bad arm. His neighbors are far enough away that he just sits on his porch and shoots without anyone hearing. He lives in "let em go let em grow" territory. Like I said, I don't know anything about hunting, but I do know that he always has an EXCESSIVE amount of vennie, and I'm positive he doesn't abide by the actual hunting season period.
I thought it was 300 feet from an inhabited building, but maybe not. I think your own property is okay, but I don't think you can shoot out a window or from the inside. If he's outside and far enough from neighbors buildings, it's probably legal as long as he only has one buck and is buying doe tags. Not that I like that one bit, but it is what it is.
Yeah, I kinda washed my hands of their whole situation. He's a piece of you know what so it wouldn't surprise me if he's poaching. He always seemed to have deer hanging in the garage every time I visited. They live west of Wautoma. It's a shame he's such a pile because I loved going up there. If he ever pi$$es me off, I'll drop a dime.
My step-dad has a bad arm, so he has a crossbow permit. He sits on his porch and quietly shoots deer coming up to the house, done it for years. Now, I know absolutely nothing about hunting. The rules and regs. I don't even like venison. But I'm pretty sure what hes doing is illegal. I couldn't possibly turn him in because my mom would get in trouble too. I look the other way.
Last year I found a young deer poached, backstraps removed, and the rest was left to rot. I called the DNR and reported it. The local warden called me back within an hour to talk to me. He had leads on poaching in the area from other hunters and said he had an idea of who it may be and needed to see the remains. Sometimes the little pieces help solve a puzzle. It can sometimes take a few years for the DNR to build a case against a poacher. That is a few more years of them killing. The sooner you report it the better.
I was at camp Tues. , stopped in at the other camp to see if they got anything. Hesitating he said my oldest son got a spike tonight. Just then he drove in with deer and atv and we looked at it and left. The next day I asked my 14 yr old son, did that buck have a tag on the ear? He stopped for a minute and said I don't think so. I was even playing with the ears. They didn't hang the deer on the buck pole neither. I wish I would have noticed but ain't shmart enough. I am going to keep a better eye on them next year. That deer was shot legally but why not tag it. Ya did the right thing. I don't know his first name but was "gone" for 6 or 7 years. Now he's back. Huh wonder where he was.
Saw some guys that I suspect were road hunting in Adams this year, but couldn't prove it enough to make the call. Doing 2mph, windows down, when we came up behind, they pulled over to let us pass, right back at it... Saw these guys on the same road, doing the same thing, 3 seperate days. Find it hard to believe they were scoping a new area to walk in for 3 days.
I witnessed a poaching incident this weekend while eating dinner. Too far away to get the license plate so they drove off into the darkness. Yes you turn them in!!! If it was a big buck all the more reason!!! Especially when you brag and say it was a bow kill!!.They robbed an oppurtunity to honest paying hunters wether it be a doe or buck. And they disrespected a magnificant animal, if you break the law you pay the price!! and thats the bottom line! Turn em in!!! find better people to run with!!!
I thank everybody for all the input, Too clear one thing up the deer shot wasnt because they needed the food, they are far better off them most people. they are just bad sportsmen and were bragging aboout the big buck that they got with the bow when actually they shot it with 22.thank you all
Pike eyes relax, sleep well at night, you did the right thing. My Grandfather, the most honorable man I've ever known, was fond of reminding me that the right thing quite often feels like the hardest thing to do. I figure that's why so many of us, myself included, hesitate on doing it sometimes. He was right though, sometimes the right thing is a tough decision. You made the right call here, look yourself in the mirror without shame.
