Built these custom road kill coyote slippers a few years back. I tanned the hide then went to fleet farm and bought the most comfortable slippers I could find. Then just sewed 'em on with really strong thread. They're holding up pretty good. I even wear them hunting on the farm I live on if there isn't too much snow. My feet have never gotten cold either.

I think it is a shame you see all those dead deer on the roads and hwy have claimed a couple of those deer one deer was to messed up but the others was fine.I see people texing while driving no wonder our insurence rates are so high.Put the phone away and pay attention excuse my language.I am sick of society not paying atention while driving. The deer are doing what they do eating then going to bed.I hunt w,e could probably see more deer if these deer werent getting hit buy cars and trucks. I have never picked up a dead deer b4 but it has crossed my mind when Im hunting for weeks at a time and seeing nothing. I sometimes think...maybe the guy in front of me will smack a deer so I can claim it. I dont see any problems with cutting off antlers. Never have but may some day. What happens to these deer? They end up in some landfill anyways...if some kids or person wants to take the antlers I say why waste them. Best thing I ever picked up on road to eat was a pumpkin pie after a pheasant hunt on Thanksgiving morning. The pie was in an actual pie pan and not some cheap tin. It was laying right side up as if placed there on purpose. I did a double take and did a U turn and went back to get it. My father inlaw and I had the greatest laughs that day. No birds but we showed up to Thanksgiving with the pie. And yes, in case your wondering I had a piece. Did I need the food no..Do I have all my teeth yes....The pie was great!

free bear roadkill tags must of changed recently (since 2008 i think)there was a lady who hit a black bear on I90 near mauston and the DNR made her pay full bear tag license price to claim her roadkill it was a really nice sized bear and had a really ice pelt as well

Vehicle killed Bear, deer, and turkey tags are all free. I got this straight from the deer hunting regulations. Vehicle-Killed Deer, Bear, and turkey tagging and possession • Any person may claim a deer, bear, or turkey that has been accidentally killed by a motor vehicle operated on a highway. The driver of a vehicle that collides with and kills a deer, bear, or turkey has first priority to the carcass. If the driver does not want the carcass, any other person who arrives at the scene may request a tag for the carcass. • Contact your sheriff’s department before moving the deer, bear, or turkey to obtain a free tag so that the carcass can be legally possessed. • See below for deer carcass transportation restrictions. note: It is illegal to use a vehicle-killed deer to obtain a Buck Authorization Sticker. 26 If the meat smells bad like guts I wouldn't take a chance. Is there guts or stomach contains on the meat. You got to make the call on deer if you think it's bad throw it out. I wouldn't take the chance of getting sick. Usually the bad smell is from the guts exploding and when you washed off the meat it will smell fine.

CDS-what I would do is remove the back straps and scrap the rest. For sure discard any meat that has a bad smell to it. I have gone with roadkill and just peeled back the fur and removed the back straps and left the rest. Hard to predict where legs and other meat will be bruised or spoiled by rotting-figure the back straps are far away from the guts, the best eating, and easy to remove at the scene (don't have to gut a frozen deer nor load it anywhere). I like the fact that you are getting use out of an animal that otherwise has none. Mike

Law Enforcement will issue car kill tags free of charge, or their dispatch center can direct you where to take a deer for a tag. Bear tags are now a set $50 tag, and there is a fee for other critters like turkey, but things are changing. Last year, a lawmanker (I think from Chippewa Falls area) proposed that all car kill animals be tagged free of charge. We were recently issued very few of these tags, and they are good for turkey, deer and bear. We were told to use the last of the regular deer tags before we start using the new ones. In years past, wardens had discretion on what to charge for a bear, it was usually 50 cents a lb.

I see it all the time. Guys will cut the smallest horns off a road kill buck. Not sure what for. Plus its illegal and not worth gettin busted over. If a deers not damaged I will take the whole thing and butcher it. Scored this one earlier this fall, ran into side of a truck and broke its skull in half, one horn was broke loose. Not a scratch on the deer. Big body. The boys got a nice set of rattlin horns now.

OK, just want your thoughts on this: On my way home from work last night, I saw two road kill deer about 1/2 mile apart. One was a big doe and the other was a small buck, either a 4 or 6 point. This morning on my way in to work, The doe was gone but the buck was still there missing it's antlers. Someone must have come along and cut them off overnight. The top of the head is facing the road and the brains are clearly visible when you drive by. Kind of disgusts me that someone would do that. If you are going to go through all of the trouble to cut the antlers off, why not just take the whole thing.

gotta be the DNR. My local warden says just to go ahead and pick an animal up if i want it, as long as I call his cell # beforehand, let him know what I have, then he'll get back to me when he has time, and we'll hash out the details then.

OK thanks SFC S,,

I paid $12 for a road kill deer yeas ago...

$20 I guess isn't so bad,,,,

Do you know how that is handled in the North Wood's area? Can any Law enforcement give the tag out?

Or does it have to be the DNR? Gotta think the later would be a PIA, just because of the time it would take to hook up with them?

We came across one a couple of years ago on our trip home, but it was getting late, and we had a four hour ride home.... It we saw it some time earlier in our weekend up North, I maybe would of tried to get that Bear.

Now $500 would just be crazy, and most likely from a crooked officer, or a poser of one...

that road kill bear tag will not be cheap, by any means. there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to how much you will be charged. i've heard everything from only a couple hundred to over five hundred. the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard is a dnr warden telling a guy i know that he has to pay $500 for the bear that he just hit and totally destroyed his minivan.

yep, you have to buy a possession tag from the DNR.
