Mice in cabins
1/17/13 @ 2:20 PM
Last summer my family stayed at a resort up North. The cabin was a real log cabin built sometime in the 40s I think. We had problems with the mice up there and was wondering if anyone else has experienced something like this.
I grew up on a dairy farm, so the presence of mice itself doesn't bother me. But, these mice had no fear of us at all. It seemed odd to me. They would come right up on the couch with us in the evening, and would be crawling around on the floor between my feet in the middle of day when we were eating lunch. I mentioned it to the owner and he said he's never heard of anyone else having an experience like that. Right now, we're trying to decide if we want to rent it again. We love the location, the cabin and the body of water, but we would rather not be sharing the furniture with overly social rodents. We've rented lots of cabins over the past 15 years or so and this is the first we've ever seen mice like this.
Any thoughts or experiences?

I am lovin the ideas but if I am paying,I aint staying with the meeces feeces. That stuff can get you sick.Any way,Tore down a chicken coop years ago,my friends were there just waiting with shotguns in hand,as I drove my tractor through it they shot over 30 rats.So now I have taken it to a new level....sorry OP
PSE--that is a great story
Rifleman--you too
Killing the mice when you get there won't help clean up all the dirt that they have left around for the last months or years. It is not that hard for the owner to keep the mice under control. A lot of us do that all the time at our cabins. A couple buckets of mouse poision spread around a few times a year will do the trick. I hate mice in my houses. They are just a sign of poor housekeeping.Talk to the owner and express your concerns. If he doesn't seem concerned about it, I would move on. Mrt.
Watch it Rifleman...You'll put your eye out with that thing. I like the Snap-eze brand, washable plastic mouse traps. You will have three quarters of the population gone in the first night, and the rest the next night. The bucket trick works for out buildings but who wants to listen to mice splashing around in water half the night.
Get a 5 gallon pail and put about 5" of water in it. Then smear some peanut butter on the inside about 5" down from the rim. Next prop a stick up on the outside at about a 45 degree angle with the top of it overhanging the rim about an inch. You will eliminate most of the mice in a couple days. Works every time when we do our fly in trips in Canada.
Had a mouse in a rental cabin 2 years ago...he didn't bother us much.
Any "old " places have a good chance of mice...lots of ways for them to get in. Newer places are harder for them to get in.
Best thing would be to keep all the viddles out of there reach. And if a problem would arise...asking the owner to do something about it isn't out of line in my opinion....at least put a few traps out.
