Fishing trip over July 4th
5/22/12 @ 12:44 PM
I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions where the wife and I could go over the 4th for about 4 days. We would like to find a place to rent on a lake where we would have some good fishing and a nice place to stay at a reasonable price. Would like to catch some panfish but Walleyes or Bass would also be nice. We have our own boat. Would also like a place near an ATV trail so we could spend a day riding. I know it's only a little over a month away but looking for any suggestions. Thanks

Iron County has more miles of ATV trails than any other county in Wisconsin.
And as Out_doors_guy said, it's home to the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage, Wisconsin's Scenic Wilderness Waters Area.
My advice is, as always, Iron county and the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage. Great scenery, outstanding fishing, a decent ATV trail system, friendly folks and NONE of the touristy crap you have in some of the areas south and east of there.

I would definitely suggest coming here, Lake of the Woods. There are a great deal of resorts with cabins right on the river or lake and Baudette does a great job with an old time 4th of july celebration. Zippel bay state park has great trails for fourwheeling and hiking as well as nice beaches.
Kind of depends on where you want to go, how many people you want around, etc.
You can't go wrong in the Vilas, Oneida, Lincoln County areas - Rhinelander, Boulder Junction, Eagle River, etc. Lots of good fishing, and rental/lake lodges.
I really like the Sawyer County area. I've been fishing in the Winter area my entire life, so I recommend it to people. It's a little slower. Less fishing pressure, not as crowded.
Barker Lake has 2 different lodges that have small rental cabins - Bucktail Lodge, and Hemlock Haven. I have stayed at Bucktail Lodge years ago, when it was a different operation. Their cabins are right on the water. About as basic as they can be - a couple of beds, a bathroom, and small kitchenette. I expect Hemlock Haven s about the same. Barker is a small lake fed by the east fork of the Chippewa River, and it directly feeds the Chippewa Flowage. Very good fishing for Panfish, LM & SM Bass, and Musky.
You also have the Flowage right there for excellent fishing.
For ATV riding, Sawyer County was voted the top ATV trail system in WI for 2011. There is riding on the Tuscobia Trail, in the Flambeau River State Forest. There is also great riding through the Chequamegon Nat Forest. The south edge of the trail runs in a loop around Barker and Hunter Lakes, into the National Forest, over to the Chip Flowage, etc.
