Again, thanks so much for the info! I am not set on Door Co. by any means, but it is on my list to visit at some point! I am thinking of staying closer in MI area just so we have more time at the location then spent driving. So I will check out the mentioned MI locations.
And yes let’s hope my husband does not stumble onto this site, but I'm pretty sure he hasn't been on here! He will be surprised/happy none the less!
With all of these great suggestions I think this is going to turn into a frequent thing for us to do so I am making mental note of all these places! Next thing I am going to be asking about is what kind of boat we should buy! We have a pontoon, but really want a fishing boat
One of these days, no suggestions just yet
I just thought of a place. Frankfort, MI is beautiful. Fishing is great and the sand dunes are awsome. I have been to traverse city and wouldnt waste the gas. I was very unimpressed with it. When the locals told us to skip it and go to sleeping bear dunes, we didnt listen, and Traverse sucked, Sleeping bear and Onekama were pretty cool. I liked Frankfort for a pretty neat port too..
If Nicolet Bay is full, there's nothing wrong with Welkers. Or for that matter, none of the areas are bad. I grew up camping at Peninsula state park and highly recommend it. You will be able to get a reservation even if the web site says their full. Call the park office. The bike and hiking trails are fantastic. Moped rental right at the park entrance. Lots of antique....stores in every town up the coast. You can stay busy or do nothing and still have a good time. http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/parks/name/peninsula/
For cabin rentals check out: http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/usa/wisconsin/wi-north-east/door-county
Fishing: August or September either one, which ever works best for your schedule.
Keep in mind, September can get chilly in Door County.
Kyle Wogsland is excellent. Very fun and he catches fish.

Check out his facebook posting. They are limiting out consistently. I have used about 4 different charters prior to fishing with Kyle the last 3 years. The best part is that he teaches you what he is doing. I still email him with questions and he gives me pointers. You will have a great time and catch fish. Fishing with Kyle this weekend.
SBJ – sorry no sisters, but some great single friends
Oh and Nicolet Bay campsites are packed and hard to get into without months in advance!
Thank you all for the great suggestions! I have been looking at a lot of these locations and am falling in love with Wis! It is so beautiful!
The plan is to camp, but what about cabin rentals in Peninsula State Park/Door Co.?
stangl52 – You gave me a great website with camping/rental but do you have any recommendations on cabins in that area?
Playinhooky – I am going to look over your website and will be in contact with you. Thanks so much!
When I am looking at Charters is there anything I should be looking for or staying away from for that matter? I want to make sure I don’t find some crappy Charter not worth my time/money. Not intended for you Playinhooky! Just want to know what to look for with all the Charters! Do most Charters supply your equipment or do we bring ours?
If you had to pick Aug or Sept for a fishing trip in Door Co. area which would it be or will there be much of a difference?
NPAR,
I agree with Door County. Right now salmon fishing is the best I have ever seen. The walleye and bass fishing is pretty awsome up here too. I run a salmon charter and would be more than happy to hook you up on that, or steer you in the direction of another guide that could take you out for what you want or an operation in that area that could better fit your needs. There is a ton to do in that area from wine tasting to camping to state parks.. If you want info or help on the area please dont hesitate to call me. If I cant help you I can put you in touch with someone that can. 920-676-7829. www.jennyannsportfishing.com. Otherwise feel free to PM me and I will help you any way I can.

First off - I would like to say there are many men on this site trying to figure out if you have a sister who thinks the same as you do. Your husband is one lucky man.
If I was in your shoes, I would do the same as some have mentioned. Door county would be my 1st choice - camp at peninsula State Park (book now, they fill very quick - try to get into the Nicolet Bay campsite if possible). From a camping standpoint, great trails, both bike and walking, can rent sailboats, kayaks, etc, golf course, and awesome sunsets if your into that type of thing. On a downside, it is very busy (busiest campsite in WI I believe), most campsites are close together and a lot of rules (quiet hours, etc). With that being said, still my favorite place to camp.
If you made your timing into August, fishing is very good for Salmon out of sturgeon bay (about a 1/2 hour south of the park) and trophy walleye and small mouth bass fishing can be done right out of the park (with a guide in your case). Having fished both Erie and Door County waters, I don't think you will see much improvement over quality between the two waters, and in some cases Erie is better than Green Bay for eyes. Smallies, both places are good.
You could book one or two trips for Salmon and one or two trips for an eye/smallie combo and probably meet all of your fishing needs. From the charter standpoint, there are many good captains up there, and also some I would completely avoid due to safety reasons. You can also have your pick of the big boat type of trip, which will cost more and might be paired with other people, or go with a smaller boat and just the two of you and a captain. I won't provide names, good and bad, right now, but PM me and I will answer all your questions.
From a non-fishing standpoint, Door Co. can offer more than you could accomplish in a week with tours, little shops, neat restaurants, craft stores, etc. Might be some good way to re-charge those marriage batteries.
FYI - my avatar is from a fishing trip I did last year out of peninsula St. Park. Both those fish were from a triple, 15# catfish and those two walleye. It was very tough alone, but landed all three.
