I bought a Humminbird Piranhamax 230 last year and have had back luck with it. On paper, it seems great but I've been just jinxed. I bought it for a Canadian fly-in trip and put in new batteries and tested it before heading out. One of the batteries leaked and corroded the terminals. Wound up spending a couple of hours cleaning the terminals out with Q-Tips - the battery case is very poorly designed. Then I inadvertently tore off the trabsducer this spring.
Anyway, when it worked, it was okay. I really only use it to mark depth and display temperature - it's not really good enough to mark fish. It will show weeks, too. I liked that it uses AA batteries.
I used to have a hummingbird before somebody stole it, and it was decent. I used it on my Grandpa's boat and he didn't want me installing a permanent one or I used it on my paddleboat. It worked great for marking depth and fish at idle, but anything faster then a couple mph and it wouldn't mark anything. Another downside was that it went through batteries like they were going out of style. It was worth the money because I had no other options but a portable.
